Max Landis’ G.I. JOE Film Not Moving Forward at Paramount

Max Landis, a screenwriter who previously faced controversy, won’t be getting a second chance in Hollywood with a new G.I. Joe project. Paramount has decided not to proceed with his idea.

According to Variety, Paramount Pictures and Hasbro have decided not to move forward with Max Landis’ vision for a new G.I. Joe movie. Landis was one of two writers the studio asked to come up with fresh ideas for the franchise. While Danny McBride, a popular actor, is still developing his own script, Landis’ proposal has been rejected. Paramount is still open to other pitches for a reboot, meaning McBride’s script isn’t confirmed either. Ultimately, it seems Paramount is still figuring out the best path forward for G.I. Joe and wasn’t satisfied with Landis’ approach.

According to Deadline‘s Anthony D’Alessandro, Paramount decided against a project because the screenwriter, John Landis, presented it with a satirical and artistic style. A source explained the studio feared this approach wouldn’t appeal to customers and ultimately led to the rejection. The source emphasized the decision wasn’t related to past accusations against Landis. Those accusations, detailed in a 2019 Daily Beast article, involved eight women credibly alleging emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. While Landis was never formally charged, he hadn’t worked with a major studio again until recently.

Despite the rejection, Paramount made a point of clarifying it was based on creative differences, not any moral concerns. They wanted to be clear about the reason for passing on Max Landis’s project. It’s a noteworthy detail.

Landis told Variety that the concept was “weird and subversive,” imagining a world ruled by Cobra. In this scenario, G.I. Joe would simply be seen as a conspiracy theory. It’s a fascinating idea – the villains in charge! It really flips things on its head.

….Anyway, just like before, we can’t wait to see what American hero Danny McBride comes up with.
