Maul: Shadow Lord Hints at George Lucas’ Abandoned Sequel Trilogy Villains?

At Star Wars Celebration, one of the unexpected reveals was the unveiling of the upcoming animated series titled Maul: Shadow Lord. This series will bring back the character of former Sith Lord Maul, voiced again by Sam Witwer. The plot unfolds a year after the conclusion of The Clone Wars, but before Maul’s appearances in both Solo and later in Rebels. Although they didn’t show an exclusive trailer, they did provide a summary. Attendees at the convention shared their insights about how Shadow Lord will portray Maul acquiring a new apprentice, a young Twi’lek girl. This narrative seems to be drawing from George Lucas’ early concepts for the sequel trilogy’s plot, which was part of the Legends material at that time.

2020 saw author Paul Duncan disclose that in George Lucas’ initial plan for the post-Empire galaxy, the primary antagonist was a criminal organization led by Darth Maul and his Sith apprentice, Darth Talon. Originally from the Star Wars: Legacy comics, this female Sith villain was central to the storyline. However, the sequels took an entirely different route. Now, Dave Filoni (a disciple of George Lucas at Lucasfilm) might be reintroducing aspects of that proposed narrative. The series primarily centers around Maul creating a criminal organization, which eventually becomes Crimson Dawn; yet it appears this will also validate Talon’s existence. She likely won’t bear the title “Darth” as it is a Sith designation, and Maul no longer belongs to the Sith. Filoni continually strives to reintegrate Lucas’ ideas into canon.

As a die-hard Star Wars fan, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the plot details of ‘Maul: Shadow Lord’. Unlike the original trilogy, where Luke and Leia are infants during this timeline, we won’t see them in this story. Instead, we’ll witness the rise of Crimson Dawn in the early days of the Empire, setting the stage for an epic showdown fans have been yearning for – Maul vs. Darth Vader. Although ‘Rebels’ came close to delivering this clash, they chose a different path.

Speaking of ‘Rebels’, it gave us a glimpse into Maul’s ultimate fate, but ‘Shadow Lord’ promises to delve deeper into his transformation from a powerful crime lord to the somewhat pitiful figure we saw in ‘Rebels’. I can hardly wait to see how this groundbreaking animated Star Wars series focusing on a villain unfolds.
