Taylor Swift’s most recent album titled “The Tortured Poets Department” has ignited much discussion about the lyrical influences behind it, with a strong focus on the potential connections to her past relationship with Matty Healy from The 1975. Interestingly, the mention of Lucy Dacus in the title track has caught people’s attention, as she is a close associate of Healy’s. Notably, Lucy Dacus herself has disclosed that Taylor Swift sought her approval prior to using her name in the song.
During an interview with People on Thursday, a member of Boygenius, aged 29, made it clear that the reference was open for interpretation, saying “It’s fair game.” Prior to this, Taylor Swift, who is 35, had reached out to seek her approval via text message.
Dacus mentioned that she received a text from someone asking for her approval, and it was strange for her to hear her own name in the song. In the department of tormented poets, Swift sings, ‘But you told Lucy you’d take your life if I ever depart / And I had said that to Jack about you, so I felt understood.’
Dacus confessed that it was “quite unusual” to hear herself referenced in a Swift song. She went on to explain, “This is the first album by Taylor that I’ve encountered since our meeting, and listening to a friend’s album feels incredibly distinct from listening to an unfamiliar artist’s work.
Previously, Dacus and Healy were good friends, but it seems their bond deteriorated following a public spat on Twitter in 2023 over topic X. Healy humorously suggested starting a band reminiscent of Boygenius, to which Dacus responded sharply, “I don’t hear from you at all.” This exchange caused Healy to deactivate his account, sparking rumors of a falling out.
In Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department, there are many songs with deeply personal lyrics that have fans guessing who they might be about, such as Guilty as Sin?, Down Bad, and The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived. Some listeners think these tracks could reference her ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn, current partner Travis Kelce, or even Taylor Swift herself. Whether this album is a direct autobiography or not, it’s undeniable that it keeps sparking curiosity and conversation with every line it delivers.
