As an ardent fan and admirer of Matthew Perry, I find myself deeply moved by his profound words and the impact he desired to leave behind in this world. His interview with Tom Power on Q with Tom Power podcast was not just a promotional event for his memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, but a heartfelt revelation of his aspirations.

Today marks one year since the passing of Matthew Perry. In honor of the beloved Friends actor, let’s reflect on how he aspired to make an impact according to the words he shared in 2022.

In an interview that had taken place a year before his death, the actor from Fools Rush In dived into an inspiring and intriguing conversation with the host of the Q with Tom Power podcast. 

During his appearance on the podcast to publicize his memoir titled “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” he was inquired about the kind of legacy he hopes to pass on upon his demise.

Matthew Perry shared that he hopes to be seen as someone who lived with purpose, gave love generously, and always pursued growth.

During the conversation that took place at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema in Toronto at the time, the 17 Again star had even mentioned that he would like to be remembered as someone who helps people. 

Speaking with Tom Power later on, Perry expressed that if someone struggling with alcoholism or drug addiction approaches him and asks for help, he would want to respond affirmatively and extend a helping hand to them.

Instead of being remembered primarily for his role in the popular TV show “Friends,” Matthew Perry desired to be recognized mainly for his compassionate character and his determination to make a difference in the world.

Back in October 2022, I had the pleasure of sharing my thoughts with PEOPLE magazine for their cover story, and among the aspects of my life that I highlighted were the things I believe have shaped me. Among these are my unwavering compassion for others, my steadfast determination not to give up, and my commitment to helping people whenever I can.

The actor highlighted his preferred traits while also sharing that he finds value in experiencing discomfort, anxiety, or unease, as these feelings often stimulate the need for creative solutions to potentially dangerous predicaments.

On October 28, 2023, it was reported that Perry was discovered deceased at a house in the Los Angeles vicinity. The actor was sadly found in a hot tub at the property, with emergency services being summoned to the site due to a suspected heart attack.

Initially, according to reports, there was no known drug found in him. But later, it came to light that traces of a large quantity of ketamine were discovered in his body.

Following this, multiple arrests were made during the investigations.
