Matthew Perry’s parents have publicly asked the judge to consider the circumstances when sentencing Dr. Plasencia, the doctor accused of contributing to Perry’s death last October.
Rolling Stone reports that Suzanne and Keith Morrison, Perry’s parents, recently sent letters to the court detailing the impact of the crime before Plasencia was sentenced on December 3rd.
I was really struck by their letter. They described their sadness as just… too much to bear. They even wrote, “How do you even begin to measure grief? It doesn’t make sense to try and explain it logically. It feels like everything just collapsing,” and that really resonated with how I imagine it must feel.
The parents accused the doctor of exploiting their son’s difficulties. They expressed their frustration, saying that all their hard work felt wasted and ruined, and specifically blamed Plasencia as being highly responsible for the negative outcome.
As a real movie fan, I was shocked to hear the details coming out. Apparently, according to ABC News, Plasencia admitted to providing Matthew Perry and his assistant with ketamine – things like vials, lozenges, and syringes – over a relatively short period, from September 30th to October 12th of last year. It’s just incredibly sad to learn these specifics.
According to his autopsy, Perry died on October 28, 2023, due to the effects of ketamine. Contributing factors included drowning, heart disease, and the presence of buprenorphine, a medication he was taking for opioid use disorder.
The letter also mentioned Perry’s future plans and the promise he showed. It quoted him saying, “His life touched so many people. He was hoping for, and truly deserved, a new chapter. We were already making plans, and then… those people intervened,”
Critics condemned the doctor for betraying his professional ethics, stating that it was widely known the patient was struggling. They accused the doctor of deliberately breaking his promises, secretly meeting with the patient, and exploiting his vulnerability for a small financial gain – just a few thousand dollars.
It really hit me hard reading about Matthew Perry’s parents, John and Debby. They shared such a heartbreaking description of him – they said he was supposed to be their support as they got older, a beloved uncle to the grandkids, and the person his siblings always relied on. Basically, he was their family’s pillar, and the next leader they were counting on. It’s just… incredibly sad to think about what they’re going through.
The lawyers confronted Plasencia directly, challenging his actions. They asked, “A doctor dedicated to healing people? What led you to do this? Did you consider how long it would take before Matthew’s condition worsened and he died? Did any of this concern you?” They then asked the judge to give him a severe punishment.
