Matt Smith Joins STAR WARS: STARFIGHTER in a Villain Role

After several years, it’s been confirmed that Matt Smith will make his appearance in a Star Wars movie. As per Deadline’s report, Lucasfilm has cast the actor known for Doctor Who and House of the Dragon in Shawn Levy’s upcoming film titled Star Wars: Starfighte. Ryan Gosling is expected to play the hero, while details about Smith’s role remain unknown, including whether he will use a red lightsaber or not. Mia Goth is also part of the cast, presumably as another villain, which might lead to an exciting match-up between Matt Smith and Mia Goth as Sith characters. Fingers crossed!

In 2018, Matt Smith was chosen by Lucasfilm for an unspecified role in “The Rise of Skywalker.” He referred to the part as a significant change, but unfortunately, he didn’t end up filming any scenes. Some fans have suggested that the revitalized Palpatine, as a result of Rey and Ben Solo’s Force connection, would be restored to his youthful appearance from before the prequels. In this scenario, Smith might have played the younger Palpatine. However, by the time filming began, Abrams and the team opted for a different approach. Regardless of your opinions on “Episode XI,” it’s understandable that they chose to keep Ian McDiarmid as the Emperor throughout the movie, rather than using Matt Smith in that role. After all, if you’re going to bring back McDiarmid as the Emperor, it makes sense to use him consistently. We can’t fault them for not utilizing Matt Smith in that instance.

The principal photography for “Star Wars: Starfighter” begins this fall and is set to hit theaters on May 28, 2027. Remarkably, this marks the 50th anniversary of George Lucas’ groundbreaking film, “A New Hope,” which will also see a significant re-release in cinemas that year. Notably, “Starfighter” is scheduled for release just a few weeks after the anniversary celebration. All signs point to an exceptional year for “Star Wars” on the silver screen in 2027.
