As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for the intricacies of Hollywood and the entertainment industry, I find Matt Smith’s candidness about his character Daemon Targaryen from House of the Dragon both refreshing and intriguing. Having followed his career since his days as the Doctor in Doctor Who, I can attest to the fact that Smith possesses a unique ability to breathe life into complex characters, making them relatable despite their flaws.
Today marks Matt Smith’s 42nd birthday, and for our series of Birthday Special Flashback articles, we are reminiscing about the instance when the esteemed British actor admitted candidly that if his character Daemon Targaryen from House of the Dragon were to ascend the throne, he would be an “awful” king.
Prior to the launch of HBO’s fantasy drama this year, Smith, during an interview with Variety, expressed his thoughts about his character in the Game of Thrones spin-off series not being destined for rule, yet he firmly believes that he would excel as a vampire. “I envision him roaming the earth for all eternity,” Smith stated.
It’s clear why Smith might believe that his character in the series could convincingly portray a ferocious, power-hungry creature. After all, Targaryens are known for their close association with power.
In my unyielding devotion to House of the Dragon, I find myself recounting the events of its gripping second season: a heartrending tale that unfolds as Daemon, my beloved character, and Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy), his niece-turned-wife, grapple with the sorrow of losing their child. Simultaneously, they engage in an elaborate power struggle, a blood feud woven intricately within the tapestry of the Iron Throne’s enduring saga.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: “In the world of my current project, I’m still unsure about where my character’s journey will lead us in season 3. During a recent panel at Comic-Con, I shared that I haven’t received the script yet. To be honest, neither hide nor hair have I heard anything about it. I turned to my esteemed co-panelists, Tom Glynn-Carney and Fabian Frankel, and asked, ‘I wonder if any of you have heard something? Because I’m definitely in the dark here.’
As an overly enthusiastic fan, I’d put it this way: “Nothing at all, no hint of it,” Glynn-Carney said, while Frankel playfully taunted, “There’s a secret I can’t spill here.
As a die-hard fan, I’m eagerly waiting for any news about when House of the Dragon will return for its third season! Regrettably, HBO hasn’t disclosed a production start date or even hinted at a potential release window yet. Yet, I hold onto hope because I know there are still two more seasons to come, with season 4 set to bring the series to an epic conclusion.
Presently, HBO is enthusiastically advertising its upcoming Game of Thrones spin-off titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” scheduled for release in 2025.
