As a devoted fan who has followed Matt Reeves‘ Batman saga from its inception, I can wholeheartedly appreciate his decision to focus solely on Oz’s story in “The Penguin.” It takes a visionary like Reeves to recognize that sometimes less is more, and the absence of Batman in this series only serves to elevate Oz’s journey.
Matt Reeves skillfully broadened his Batman crime saga series with the debut of The Penguin. Some viewers initially doubted if Oswald Cobblepot (Oz), who made his first appearance in The Batman: Part I, would be capable of headlining a show. However, when the initial episode premiered, it became evident that HBO and Reeves had created a successful production.
Earlier confirmation was made by Reeves that Batman wouldn’t be a regular feature in the series, except for a subtle nod in the last episode. Although some viewers felt let down, many others understood that introducing Batman could potentially eclipse the narrative of Oz.
Following the grand finale, I chatted with Entertainment Weekly where Matt Reeves revealed that at one point, they contemplated introducing Vic and Bruce Wayne to each other, but ultimately chose a different path.
Reeves shared that the team considered various options to incorporate Bruce Wayne into ‘The Penguin’, but none seemed authentic. One proposal was a scene in which Bruce would interact with Vic, portrayed by Rhenzy Feliz, who is Oswald Cobblepot’s right-hand man. However, Reeves mentioned that even this idea didn’t quite fit, as he explained, “Even that option ended up disrupting the flow too much.
Throughout the process of crafting this season’s storyline, we frequently debated if any plot points could naturally connect (or cross-over) without feeling forced. We brainstormed various possibilities, yet none were developed into actual script, as they lacked the authenticity and organic feel that we aimed for.
As a devoted fan, I’d express it like this: Much like Showrunner Lauren LeFranc, I believe introducing Batman could overshadow the narrative of Oz, making his story seem less significant.
In this series, we aimed to make our characters the main focus for viewers to follow. Any elements that distracted from this central theme were not contributing to the kind of program we intended to create.

In Arkham Asylum, LeFranc provided a comparable reason for why Magpie was the sole antagonist portrayed. She stated that overloading the episode with references and Easter eggs would divert attention from Sofia’s narrative, which is essential because it sheds light on all her subsequent decisions. The backstory of Sofia is vital as it underpins all her later choices.
