As a seasoned gamer and die-hard fan of the Dark Knight, I must say that Matt Reeves‘ explanation for Batman’s absence in “The Penguin” has left me both intrigued and slightly disappointed. While it makes sense within the narrative timeline, the lack of our caped crusader in this Gotham City tale was a bit jarring. However, knowing that the Bat-Signal lighting up the sky at the end of the series is a teaser for their inevitable showdown in “The Batman – Part II” has revived my excitement.
As a die-hard gamer, I can’t help but feel the void left by the conclusion of “The Penguin” on HBO. The enigmatic duo of Oz Cobb and Sofia Falcone have certainly left us hanging, eagerly anticipating their next criminal escapades. However, as a dedicated fan of the “Gotham Knights” spin-off series, “The Batman,” a burning question lingers: where in the world was the Dark Knight during the events of “The Penguin”? The series never showed us the Caped Crusader on screen and, surprisingly, not even his name was uttered once. All we got was a Bat-signal illuminating the sky at the end of the final episode.
During this period, the city was plagued by intense upheaval; it’s as if the events depicted in ‘The Batman’ had just occurred last week. The despair is widespread, leaving many areas unattended by police due to rampant crime. This is a particularly perilous time, where danger lurks around every corner. Amidst this chaos, [Batman] is struggling to cope with the repercussions of recent events, feelings of guilt contributing somewhat to his self-blame.
To put it simply, after the Riddler breached the city’s sea defenses and caused widespread flooding, Batman found himself quite occupied. He neglected to closely monitor the power struggle within the mafia following Carmine Falcone’s death. Furthermore, director Matt Reeves hinted to fans that The Penguin is set just weeks after the events of The Batman, with the former film unfolding from Halloween until the Gotham City elections in early November. The Penguin follows this timeline but is set before winter arrives. Nonetheless, we can expect Oz Cobblepot and Batman to cross paths once more, this time on the big screen. Colin Farrell has confirmed his return in The Batman: Part II, due for release in 2026.
