Joey Tribbiani, a beloved character from Friends, has returned to our screens through a newly released spin-off series on the official YouTube channel of Friends. This unexpected premiere took place on Tuesday, sparking great excitement among fans who were thrilled to catch another glimpse of Matt LeBlanc portraying their favorite character.
As a devoted fan, I found it intriguing to learn that just two episodes of the spin-off series “Joey” have been uploaded onto YouTube, marking its debut online since its initial release way back in 2004.
If you haven’t heard yet, Joey starred in two remarkable seasons and a total of 46 captivating episodes. This television show ran from 2004 to 2006, with Shana Goldberg-Meehan and Scott Silveri being its creators.
As a devoted fan, I must confess that although the pilot episode of the series attracted an impressive 18.6 million viewers, the buzz seemed to plummet in subsequent episodes. Regrettably, some reports indicate that the viewership for Matt LeBlanc’s character Joey inexorably dwindled throughout Seasons 1 and 2.
Initially, when the show first aired, NBC scheduled it for their prime-time slot on Thursdays – a slot that also housed “Friends.” But by 2006, the show was shifted to Tuesday nights, and eventually, it was taken off the air.
According to a report from Variety, it appears that eight episodes of “Joey” did not air in the United States, yet they were distributed on various international broadcasting platforms instead.
Following the cancellation of Joey, Kevin S. Bright, a key creator of Friends, shared his thoughts: “In ‘Friends’, Joey was quite the ladies’ man, but we always appreciated his antics. He was a reliable friend, someone you could always depend on.
He additionally commented, during his conversation with The Age, that Joey was “disassembled” into someone struggling to secure employment and someone lacking the confidence to approach a woman romantically.
According to Bright, Joey’s portrayal evolved into a more pitiful figure that left him with a feeling of misguidance regarding the character’s development trajectory. Regrettably, these concerns didn’t seem to be heeded.
Joey played opposite Matt LeBlanc, along with Drea de Matteo, Paulo Costanzo, Jennifer Coolidge, and Andrea Anders.
