Matt Damon says a major diet change helped him reach one of his lowest weights in decades.
Actor Matt Damon, age 55, recently discussed his preparation for his new film, The Odyssey. During promotional interviews, he shared that he lost a considerable amount of weight at the director’s request to accurately portray the character.
Damon wanted to get in shape – specifically, to look toned without losing strength. He achieved this by making a single, focused change to what he ate.
“I literally… stopped eating gluten,” Damon said during an appearance on the New Heights podcast.
The actor shared that he normally weighs more, but he got down to 167 pounds for the movie. He hadn’t been that light since he was a teenager. He explained that achieving this involved a lot of hard work at the gym and a very careful diet.
He explained that staying in shape becomes a regular part of his day when he’s getting ready for a movie. He carefully plans his workouts, meals, and sleep around his shooting schedule, similar to how an athlete trains for a competition.
Damon confirmed the dietary shift has lasted. He explained he’s completely cut out gluten and has continued to do so even after finishing the film.
Gluten is a protein naturally present in grains like wheat, rye, and barley. While some individuals need to avoid it because of conditions like celiac disease or digestive problems, most people don’t need to eliminate it from their diet, according to health professionals.
Experts agree that simply cutting out gluten doesn’t guarantee weight loss. A healthy diet, rich in whole foods like grains, is still important for overall well-being.
Damon is no stranger to physically challenging roles. He’s often talked about how tougher it gets to train intensely as he ages, particularly when preparing for action-packed parts.
