As a die-hard fan of cinematic masterpieces and a devoted admirer of the late, great Robin Williams, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of nostalgia upon hearing Matt Damon’s heartfelt reminiscences about their iconic collaboration in Good Will Hunting. The way he passionately advocates for a bronze statue of Robin to be placed in Boston’s Public Garden, where they filmed one of the most poignant scenes of the movie, is nothing short of magical.
Matt Damon recently paid tribute to his late acting partner, Robin Williams. Damon reminisced about their time together on the set of their Academy Award-winning film “Good Will Hunting” from 1997. He recounted his work experience with him and revealed that someone suggested placing a ‘bronze statue’ of Williams in Boston’s Public Garden as a tribute.
As reported by People magazine, Damon recently chatted with journalist Jake Hamilton about his latest movie titled The Instigators. In this discussion, he also mentioned a thought-provoking proposal regarding a permanent bronze statue of Robin Williams being installed in Boston’s garden. He expressed that the idea was touching, stating, “if you ever feel lonely, you can sit next to him,” which Damon found to be an incredibly innovative concept.
The publication pointed out that if a statue of the late, cherished actor were ever made in the future, it would be placed near the famous bench in the park where Damon and Williams filmed one of Good Will Hunting’s most touching scenes. In addition, the actor from The Last Duel movie expressed his thoughts, stating, “It would be a stunning addition and such an honor to that man, whom I believe would have appreciated it.” He learned about this proposal about a month ago and hopes it becomes reality, allowing the artist to create it, finding it “quite intriguing.”
Reminiscing about my cherished moments on set, I can’t help but reflect upon the unforgettable bench scene from Good Will Hunting, where my character, Will Hunting, shared a profound conversation with Robin William’s Dr. Sean Maguire. As reported by the outlet, I shared with Hamilton, “Robin was already memorized for pre-production, which was astonishing because that monologue spanned over two pages!” It’s worth mentioning that in this scene, my character barely utters a word, only a line at the start, while Robin took center stage and delivered an exceptional performance.
He remembered rehearsing it with him, saying that since he and Ben Affleck had written the script, so he was also “off-book,” but when the Jack movie actor put his script down, he and Affleck looked at each other and thought, “This is going to be amazing.”
In a remarkable turn of events, both Matt Damon and Robin Williams were recognized with accolades for their work in Good Will Hunting. Robin Williams was honored with an Academy Award for his outstanding performance as Best Supporting Actor, while the screenplay authored by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck earned them the prestigious Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
Right now, Damon plays the role of Rory in the new Doug Liman heist comedy, “The Instigators,” which co-stars Casey Affleck. You can watch it on Apple TV+ starting August 9.
