The latest preview for the movie “Materialists” shows us a sneak peek at the complicated love story involving Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal. This A24 production, helmed by Academy Award-nominated director Celine Song, is among the most eagerly awaited films of the year.
In the given movie, as suggested by its description, the story revolves around an ambitious matchmaker who encounters a challenging situation when she becomes entangled in a harmful love triangle. This predicament jeopardizes not only her personal relationships but also her successful matchmaking business.
The film starts by giving us a peek into Lucy’s (Johnson) realm of arranging relationships, where we see her interacting with diverse clients and assisting them in finding their ideal partners. A voiceover comments, “No one masters this game like Lucy, but love doesn’t factor into her calculations.
The setting changes to Lucy engaging in a heated dispute with John (Evans) right in the heart of a bustling street. “Don’t you understand how challenging it is to keep you content?”, he queries her. Next, we see the ever-unmarried Lucy crossing paths with Henry Castillo (Pascal), who embodies perfection, at one of her clients’ social gatherings. As the relationship deepens, Henry demonstrates that he truly fits the bill as her ideal partner.
At some point, she expresses to him that he makes her feel important. Yet, there’s an inexplicable pull that continues to bring her back to her flawed ex, leaving her in a state of confusion over who she should be with. The narration characterizes the film as a contemporary exploration of genuine love.
Previously, Celine Song had been in charge of a highly praised romantic drama titled Past Lives. This movie, released in 2023, featured Greta Lee, Teo Yoo, and John Magaro as its stars. The film garnered nominations for both Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards that particular year.
The movie “Materialists” is being produced by Christine Vachon, Pam Koffler of Killer Films, and David Hinojosa from 2AM, with Song also contributing as the writer. This film is set to be released in theaters on June 13, 2025.
