A TV adaptation of the popular video game Mass Effect has been in the works with Prime Video since 2021, and development is still progressing well. Doug Jung, known for The Chief of War, will be the showrunner, collaborating with Daniel Casey, a writer from Fast & Furious 9. BioWare recently shared a significant update regarding the story of the new Mass Effect TV series, and here’s what they revealed:
The writers are making excellent progress, and we have a clear understanding of how the show fits into the established Mass Effect story and where it takes place in relation to the upcoming game. The show will tell a completely new story within the Mass Effect universe, taking place after the events of the original trilogy. It won’t simply retell Commander Shepard’s adventure – that’s a story that belongs to you, the player.
We’re really pleased with the creative approach the Mass Effect TV series is taking. It’s usually better for a TV show to build its own story within a familiar universe, rather than simply recreating the original source material, though both can work well. It appears Prime Video learned from the success of the Fallout series with this Mass Effect approach. Setting the show in the future of the Mass Effect timeline is a smart move too, as it avoids contradicting the established story from the popular games.
We’re still hoping Jennifer Hale and the other voice actors from the Mass Effect games will be involved in future installments – they deserve to be!
We’re really excited to hear that the writing team for the Prime Video Mass Effect series is making good progress! This suggests the show is actually moving forward, which is great news. Hopefully, it all comes together!
