As an ardent manga enthusiast with over two decades of immersion in this captivating world, I must confess that the impending conclusion of Oku-san by the illustrious Masakazu Ooi has left me reeling. The 15-year journey through Kyoko Okita’s life has been an unparalleled delight, and the thought of its end is bittersweet. It’s like bidding adieu to a dear friend who’s moved towns, but you still have their memories etched in your heart.
Artist Masakazu Ooi has confirmed that her manga series “Oku-san” will come to an end in September after a 15-year run. While she had previously announced the conclusion of the series in two remaining chapters in July, this latest confirmation seems to have made the decision final.
Through their official account (previously known as Twitter), Shonengahosha announced last Friday that their magazine Young King Ours GH, where seinen manga are published, will cease operations after the November issue, set for release on September 17. With this upcoming deadline approaching, fans appear to be growing sentimental as they prepare for the end of this long-running series.
Ooi’s story with Oku-san began in Shonengahosha’s Monthly Young King magazine way back in 2009, and it persisted even after the magazine was renamed to its current title, Young King Ours GH. Last year, in November, Shonengahosha published the 21st volume of the manga.
Ooi’s manga focuses on the life of Kyoko Okita, often referred to as Oku-san, as she moves into the Clover Apartment complex with her husband. Readers can delve into their daily routines and those of the other apartment residents, making it a delightful and engaging read. Over time, the manga has garnered widespread popularity due to its entertaining, relaxing, and effortless reading experience.
It’s worth noting that Masakazu Ooi and Inumaru have revealed that another one of their widely acclaimed mangas is nearing its end. The sequel to Isekai Affair, titled Isekai Affair II: Guided Wives and Clumsy Otherworld Heroes, which is a spin-off from Isekai Affair: 10 Years After Defeating the Demon King, in which the hero cheats on his wife with a warrior woman who lost her husband, will apparently conclude its run in December with the ninth volume. These mangas began appearing on Shogakukan’s Sunday Webry website in November of 2021 and December of 2020, respectively.
As a lover of all things manga, it’s hard not to notice that 2023 seems to be the year of goodbyes for some truly iconic series. From the action-packed adventures of My Hero Academia, the supernatural thrills of Jujutsu Kaisen, to the camaraderie and battles in Black Clover, it feels like we’re witnessing the twilight of a golden age for manga enthusiasts. Even though the anime adaptations of these series will continue to entertain us for years to come, the news that these stories are nearing their end has left many fans with a bittersweet feeling.
