Marvel’s ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Set to Begin Filming in Spain This November

As a seasoned gamer and avid MCU fan, I must say that the news of Oviedo hosting the production of The Fantastic Four: First Steps has sent a jolt of excitement coursing through my veins! Having grown up watching the Marvel universe unfold on the big screen, it’s thrilling to see these iconic stories coming to life in my very own city.

In the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film, titled “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” the Calatrava building will temporarily function as the United Nations headquarters, at least within the context of the movie. Beginning mid-November, Oviedo will play host to the production of this film, which is slated for release in July 2025.

The Film Commission’s efforts weren’t responsible for the movie reaching Oviedo; instead, it was a result of promotional campaigns conducted within the city, particularly at the Palacio de Congresos during the Gastronomic Capital festivities.

The campaigns showcasing personalities such as José Andrés caught the interest of independent tech specialists who know the location. Over time, this resulted in the production company choosing the site for filming.

Approximately half a year ago, our production crew found themselves captivated by the Palacio de Congresos in Oviedo during a visit. They were so smitten that they decided to incorporate it into the movie “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” directed by Matt Shakman. While Asturias was considered for outdoor filming spots, the majority of the production will actually happen in Scotland.

The filming process has commenced, and it’s anticipated that Oviedo will play host to the concluding events before the movie’s summer debut.

200 technicians from the production team are scheduled to arrive in Oviedo soon. These experts will be instrumental in preparing the Calatrava building for its temporary role as the United Nations’ film headquarters, with some of them already starting to install necessary equipment for the transformation.

To get ready, the City Council has stepped up cleaning activities surrounding the structure, focusing especially on external views for filming purposes. However, most of the shooting is scheduled to happen indoors, in places such as the auditorium, foyer, and the glass-enclosed room.

A week ago, an audition for background actors took place at the site where Marvel-Disney is set to shoot their production, attracting more than 500 ambitious individuals wanting to take part.

The Spanish film production team, responsible for filming on location, has entered into a 30,000-euro contract with the Oviedo City Council. This agreement ensures access to required spaces and facilitates setup and dismantling of equipment at the Congress Palace.

The filming caused a shift in the locations of the events to the auditoriums within the Príncipe Felipe Auditorium. Yet, this change has opened up possibilities for the future, as the production company is contemplating a return to the Calatrava for another project later in the year, possibly in December.
