As a lifelong Marvel fan with a soft spot for cosmic adventures and a deep appreciation for both Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the upcoming Nova series! The idea of a Nova Corps ensemble that draws inspiration from these two iconic sci-fi franchises is nothing short of exhilarating.
It seems the Marvel Studios has been hinting at a series or film based on their cosmic sci-fi hero Nova since 2017. Earlier this year, Kevin Feige revealed that Nova would indeed be coming to live-action as a Disney+ series. He said it was still “three to four years away,” but that doesn’t mean they don’t have an idea what this new show will be based on. Talking to the Phase Zero podcast, Marvel’s Brad Winnerbaum revealed that Nova will draw inspiration from two specific spacefaring franchises. And for once, none are Star Wars.
It seems that the Nova is a metaphor for the new and the easy to read language. I don’t say too much, but it’s like a great case of characters that’s getting shades of Battlestar Galactica.
Initially introduced in “The Man Called Nova” #1 back in 1976, the character known as Nova first emerged as New York teenage resident Richard Rider. He received the cosmic powers of a Nova Centurion from Xandar’s last member belonging to the StarCorps. With these powers, he could access the Nova Force, enabling him to fly, emit energy blasts, and possess superhuman strength. In essence, you might say he combines traits similar to Spider-Man and Green Lantern from DC Comics. Richard Rider has been a regular character in Marvel Comics since then. More recently, he has taken on the role of mentor for another Nova from Earth, also a teenager named Sam Alexander.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), we’ve previously encountered the Nova Corps in the movie ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, on the planet Xandar. Tragically, Xandar was later destroyed by Thanos in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’. Given this event, it’s plausible that a member of the Nova Corps could have survived and reached Earth. Upon arriving on our planet, they could potentially pass their powers to Richard Rider, becoming Nova. Alternatively, it’s also possible that some members of the Nova Corps managed to survive Xandar’s destruction, which aligns with the ensemble comments made by Winderbaum in relation to ‘Star Trek’.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the Nova Corps could be similar to Starfleet from Star Trek, with numerous Nova Centurions stationed on a spacecraft. If only a few remain, it’s understandable why some compare them to Battlestar Galactica. We’re thrilled that Nova is finally making an appearance in the MCU after such a long wait!
