The latest whispers suggest that the ongoing Marvel series on Disney+, titled Nova, may include the character Annihilus once more.
The word on the street is that Daniel RPK contends the Nova series involves both Richard Rider and the Nova Corps, pitted against Annihilus.
MCU adapting Annihilation?
It appears Marvel Studios is planning to transform the acclaimed “Annihilation” comic book series from 2005/2006 (a whopping 20 years ago!). This storyline centers around Annihilus and his troops from the Negative Zone launching an attack on our universe. The catastrophic result is the destruction of Xandar, home planet of the Nova Corps. This leaves Richard Rider as the solitary survivor among the Nova Corps, who then ascends to the position of Nova Prime.
The story Annihilation introduces characters like the Silver Surfer, Galactus, Drax, Super Skrull, and Ronan. Essentially, while Earth’s Marvel heroes were embroiled in conflicts during Civil War and engaging in their own soap opera, Nova was off on a mission to protect the universe.
Back in the day, I was thrilled to see lesser-known Marvel characters take center stage in “Annihilation”, paving the way for the success of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies later on. At that point, Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada primarily focused on whether “Annihilation” and its related titles were profitable, and they certainly were.
When Marvel Studios gave the go-ahead for Gunn’s movie, Quesada and Marvel Comics decided to cancel Marvel Cosmic, marking a significant shift in the cosmic Marvel universe that hasn’t quite recovered since. I must admit, Bendis’ Guardians and Loeb’s Nova didn’t live up to my expectations, and it seems the rest of Marvel Comics followed suit, introducing more progressive themes and replacing characters, which some fans, including myself, found less appealing.
Watch out for bait-and-switch
As a die-hard Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fan, I’m excitedly waiting to see how they’ll weave Nova into the grand scheme of things. The helm for this cosmic journey is in the capable hands of Ed Bernero, a TV maestro renowned for his work on shows like Third Watch, Criminal Minds, and Crossing Lines. His background as a former Chicago cop aligns perfectly with the Nova Corps’ role as space police. Here’s to hoping they stay on course!
Be vigilant about potential deceptions, such as promoting Richard Rider to win over Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans but ultimately delivering a watered-down version, like Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel, which have been criticized for their ‘woke’ portrayals. Additionally, pay attention to determine if the Nova series is being used as a stepping stone to introduce Annihilus as a future villain in the MCU. Fans of Marvel Cosmic stories have historically experienced disappointments, and it seems likely this trend will continue.
One potential rephrase could be: “It’s disappointing that the show is on Disney+, as the recent MCU shows like She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, and Secret Invasion haven’t done well. This might mean a lower budget for Nova, especially since it seems to be more of a space opera. A space opera typically requires a substantial budget, unlike Gunn’s Green Lantern series, which is Earth-based due to Warner Bros.’ financial struggles.
In another twist, Annihilus is known as an adversary of the Fantastic Four. This could potentially link him to the upcoming Fantastic Four film. However, recent comic book attempts at a similar connection have received poor reviews. If you avoid comics post 2011, you should be good.
