Initially, I discussed Kevin Feige’s displeasure among MCU fans. Now, it appears that Marvel Studios’ “Thunderbolts” film, despite being rebranded as “New Avengers,” flopped at the box office on Monday. This disappointment comes even after The Avengers cast attempted to promote the movie from the set of “Doomsday.
On Monday, the group known as either “Thunderbolts” or “The New Avengers,” depending on your preference, earned a modest $5 million, marking one of the lowest Monday takings for any Marvel Cinematic Universe film.
On Mondays, considering inflation, it ranks as the second-lowest grossing film, surpassed only by The Marvels, much like its reported opening weekend earnings of $74 million fell short compared to initial expectations.
Films dating back almost two decades outperformed the latest Avengers release, as The Incredible Hulk earned $6 million in 2008, and Ant-Man made $6.4 million in 2015. Now let’s see how Eternals fared. On its first Monday, it grossed $4.3 million. After accounting for inflation, its adjusted first Monday earnings come out to approximately $5.07 million, surpassing the earnings of The Thunderbolts.
For a period of four days, the movie “New Avengers” has earned $81.3 million domestically. On the other hand, “Captain America: Brave New World” garnered $100 million in its first four days, with an added boost on President’s Day, earning $11.1 million. It appears that this film will indeed flop, as confirmed.
Movie “Cap 4” earned approximately $414.9 million at the global box office. To put things into perspective, if all goes as planned with “New Avengers” or “Thunderbolts”, they might manage to reach around $400 million. However, if no changes occur, their projected earnings are looking more like a modest $350 million.
Over the upcoming weekend, we’ll find out if renaming the project to “New Avengers” by Feige will have an impact. But, what transpires when audiences anticipate watching “Thunderbolts,” expecting a New Avengers storyline, only to discover it at the end of the movie in a humorous post-credit sequence?
In this film, the New Avengers group doesn’t intertwine with the main storyline that unfolds. For longtime comic enthusiasts, it’s important to note that the New Avengers in this movie are not the traditional team consisting of Iron Man, Captain America, Wolverine, and Spider-Man.
In comparison, the portrayal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe seems rather humorous, indicating that perhaps Kevin Feige has lost touch with the audience’s preferences.
Additionally, it underscores that the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s triumph up until “Endgame” was largely due to Jon Favreau, Joss Whedon, James Gunn, and the Russos. After they departed, the MCU seemingly struggled under Kevin Feige’s leadership.
