From the inception of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with “Iron Man” in 2008, the on-screen universe has differed significantly from its comic book counterpart that served as its inspiration. However, despite the MCU’s unprecedented success, this gap persisted, until now. As reported by Deadline, Marvel Comics will launch a special “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” comic book this summer, directly connected to the continuity of the upcoming MCU film. This marks the first time Marvel has produced a comic within the MCU’s timeline. The one-shot is being penned by Matt Fraction, who previously wrote for “Fantastic Four” and “Hawkeye”, with artwork by Mark Buckingham, known for his illustrations on multiple “Fantastic Four” comics. Phil Noto, a frequent artist in the “Star Wars” series, is responsible for the cover art.
This unique MCU-Marvel Comics crossover storyline is based on the idea that it’s an artifact originating from the film’s universe. Similar to traditional Marvel Comics, this comic book series chronicles the team’s escapades as if they were licensed comics within the story itself. This fresh comic serves as confirmation that the upcoming MCU movie resumes four years after the Fantastic Four adopted their superhero roles. The creators of this special MCU issue collaborated closely with filmmakers, taking design cues from production designer Kasra Farahani’s work on the film. Matt Fraction and other contributors even paid visits to the set during its production. Phil Noto’s cover art pays tribute to Jack Kirby’s iconic cover for Fantastic Four #1, which was published in 1961.
According to Marvel Comics’ editor-in-chief, C.B. Cebulski, here’s a sneak peek at the upcoming one-shot titled “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“:
C.B. Cebulski from Marvel Comics shared some insights on the upcoming special issue called “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“.
With the upcoming release of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” this summer, it seemed fitting to unite our Marvel teams from Publishing and Studios to celebrate the enduring legacy of the Fantastic Four in both our comic books and films. It’s been a thrilling process exchanging ideas between our teams, resulting in a unique and extraordinary project that fans will have an opportunity to explore this summer – diving deep into the Marvel Cinematic Universe while experiencing the Fantastic Four like never before!
Could it be that this unique one-off issue might spark additional Marvel Comics tied to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)? Given the time frame between Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, there’s a strong possibility that we will see numerous comics being released, considering the multitude of characters involved. Intriguingly, this could pave the way for an extensive collection of MCU-related comics from Marvel Comics. In the near future, don’t forget to grab a copy of The Fantastic Four: First Steps in comic shops on July 2.
