After catching a glimpse of the trailer for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”, I couldn’t help but notice the buzz surrounding the creation of these characters, with many moviegoers pointing out the apparent use of artificial intelligence in their design. Marvel Studios has indeed unveiled four striking posters that hint at the origins of our favorite superhero family, leaving fans questioning whether AI played a role in their conception.
One specific poster showcases an individual with four digits instead of the usual five, and interestingly, the face appears twice (as shown below). It’s worth noting that creating fingers can be challenging for artificial intelligence. Furthermore, it has been verified that Marvel Studios employed AI technology in the opening sequence of their Secret Invasion series on Disney+.
AI wasn’t used says Marvel
However, according to Deadline, “A rep from Marvel Studios tells Deadline that AI wasn’t used.”
Did Marvel really use AI in the poster?
It seems plausible to me that AI was involved in designing this poster, though not necessarily for the entire piece. The five figures upfront could be real or drawn by a human, but the background appears to be more likely generated by AI. Moreover, the depiction of the hand with four fingers is quite unusual and hard to imagine being created naturally by an artist. I can’t think of how an artist would draw it like that.
It’s not uncommon for comic book artists to reuse certain images multiple times for efficiency, and repeating a single face in a crowd scene isn’t particularly unexpected. However, it can come off as rather lackluster or careless.
AI just another tool
Concerning AI applications, I had discussions with Marvel insiders and a VFX artist on this topic a few years back during San Diego Comic-Con. The VFX artist wasn’t overly concerned about using AI, considering it as yet another tool available in their creative toolkit. They likened working with AI to using an additional paintbrush, but emphasized that the human mind remains unparalleled when compared to artificial intelligence.
In the beginning of “Secret Invasion,” it was believed by the visual effects artists that Kevin Feige deliberately employed AI to create effects that appeared subpar, thereby suggesting they didn’t meet the usual high standards of visual effects studios.
It’s noteworthy that during the period preceding the writers’ and actors’ strikes, it was mentioned that the VFX artists believed that Feige intentionally employed AI in the production of Secret Invasion. This suggestion was made because they thought that by doing so, Feige was aiming to draw attention to their cause and support the strike, as well as the VFX artists.
