Unlike a few years ago when Marvel Studios was making like 16 different TV shows at once, now the small screen branch of the entertainment giant is pulling back on even its longest-gestating projects. We discussed this a while back, with executive Brad Winderbaum saying Marvel Television would develop series much more in line with how regular networks do. As a result, according to Deadline, Marvel has paused development on a Nova series—announced back in 2022—along with Strange Academy and Terror, Inc.
We’re gradually adapting to a fresh approach in Marvel’s TV productions on Disney+. Previously, Marvel managed TV shows much like its films. Once Kevin Feige marked a title and release date, it was largely set in stone (except for the case of Blade, of course). Now, the studio seems to be covertly developing multiple projects, each with different writers and showrunners attached. Only those ready to go are moving forward. As stated in a recent Deadline article, none of the three projects have received official approval yet.
By December 2023, Winderbaum had discussed the upcoming “Nova” series, which is based on Marvel’s space-faring law enforcement hero. At that point, he revealed that the series would be influenced by well-known science fiction exploration shows such as “Star Trek” and “Battlestar Galactica”. Originally, Marvel had brought aboard writer Sabir Pirzada to develop the series. However, by last year’s end, Pirzada had departed from the project, with “Criminal Minds” veteran Ed Bernero taking over as both writer and executive producer.
The television series named “Strange Academy” would have been based on the comic book series of the same title. This series was developed by Skottie Young and artist Humberto Ramos, making its first appearance in March 2020. The story unfolds in New Orleans and revolves around a unique school for sorcerers. In this setting, Doctor Strange assumes a role similar to Professor X as the founder of the institution, which aims to nurture young individuals with magical talents. The anticipated show would primarily concentrate on Wong, played by Benedict Wong, and his leadership at the school.
Terror, Inc. is not a title I know really at all. It follows Terror, who possesses the ability to incorporate the body parts of others into his own form, gaining their memories and abilities. Kinda weird. Created by Dan Chichester, Margaret Clark, and Klaus Janson, the character first appeared under the name Shreck in St. George #2 in August 1988 before his reintroduction as Terror in the 1992 series.
It appears that Marvel is now mirroring James Gunn’s approach to DCU, as he previously announced numerous projects for 2023 but has since indicated that those ready will be released first. Interestingly, Mike Flanagan’s “Clayface” movie, which was not initially part of the plan, has now been scheduled for the third release, following “Superman” and “Supergirl.
I find myself appreciating the new approach Marvel Studios has taken with their title formats, as it might prevent them from unveiling entire phases so far in advance. It’s just a suggestion I had.
