Given that Charlie Cox is now in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and “Daredevil: Born Again” set to release next month, there are rumors circulating that Marvel Television might consider a comeback for characters like Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist.
History behind Marvel Studios and Marvel Netflix
Initially, all four characters were associated with Marvel’s Netflix series, distinct from Kevin Feige’s Marvel Studios, with no direct connection between them at that point in time.
Kevin Feige vs Jeph Loeb
The two departments had minimal cooperation. Kevin Feige oversaw the movies, while Jeph Loeb managed Marvel’s Netflix series. It is said that Feige and Loeb disliked each other (I’ve heard rumors about the Marvel film team calling Loeb a “jerk.”) Nevertheless, it’s clear that Feige would now appreciate having Netflix’s viewership.
In a significant shift, Kevin Feige, the mastermind behind Marvel on Disney+, has been adjusting certain projects due to their underperformance. For instance, Daredevil: Born Again was altered to align more with the successful Netflix series rather than the initial She-Hulk concept, as sources had suggested. Similarly, after the $200 million failure of Secret Invasion, Feige revamped Marvel Studios’ TV division. This restructuring included hiring executives who were less inclined towards comic book creators, in contrast to earlier decisions made by Loeb and his team, which included big names like Bendis and Joe Quesada from the comic book world.
Feige’s Marvel has become a big bust
Since then, Feige has assumed control over Marvel, and it hasn’t been a positive development. I suspect that sales of direct market comic books are at an all-time low, with around half of all comic book stores having shut down. Not long ago, the primary distributor of comic books, Diamond, went bankrupt as well. Similarly, the last five years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been disappointing under Feige’s progressive DEI adaptation of the Marvel Comics NOW! label, which seems to be a clear misstep. The film The Marvels has been the poorest-performing superhero movie ever made, and it’s uncertain if Captain America: Brave New World will even manage to recoup its costs.
What about the Marvel Netflix characters?
Regarding the Marvel Netflix characters, we’ll be seeing projects led by Brad Winderbaum, who serves as Marvel Studios’ Chief for Streaming, TV, and Animation.
Winderbaum shared with Entertainment Weekly, “I’m not at liberty to reveal much, but let me tell you, it’s a thrill to be given the opportunity to play in that sandbox.” He added, “Of course, we don’t have the freedom of infinite storytelling like comic books. If you can imagine it, we can bring it to life.
He went on to explain, “Managing actors, time, and the immense scope of production to construct a cinematic universe, particularly for TV, presents quite a challenge. However, when you factor in all those elements, it’s undeniably an incredibly creative endeavor that we are thoroughly enjoying delving into.
Rumors
It’s been speculated that the Marvel Netflix characters are making a comeback. For instance, Jessica Jones was initially meant to feature in “Spider-Man: Friendly Neighborhood,” but when they revamped it to exclude the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), another character took her place. It’s been suggested that an alternate Iron Fist will appear in the upcoming “Wakanda” animated series. Details about Luke Cage are scarce, but Mike Colter, who played him, recently finished working on Paramount+’s “Evil,” so there might be a chance we’ll see him in the MCU. Both Krysten Ritter and Finn Jones have hinted at a return to the MCU as well.
A while back, there were plans for an “Iron Fist” TV show that had been mentioned, and Jones spoke about it last year, expressing his desire to work with Colter again.
Ritter has also said she wants to return as Jessica Jones.
