Marvel Studios Allegedly Cuts All Ties Between Sabra and Israel in Response to Backlash for ‘Captain America: Brave New World

As a lifelong Marvel fan who has watched every movie, read countless comics, and even dressed up as Captain America for Halloween more times than I can count, I find myself deeply saddened by the recent developments surrounding Sabra in “Captain America: Brave New World.

The upcoming movie titled “Captain America: Brave New World” has stirred up debates even before it’s released. Not only are there worries about its reported low-quality and the costly reshoots, but also calls for the elimination of a significant character from the storyline.

The controversy centers around Sabra, a Jewish superhero with a Mossad background. Criticism began when her inclusion was first announced, and tensions heightened after news of the reshoots revealed that Sabra remained in the film, despite the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, sparking even more debate.

In the thrilling trailer for “Captain America: Brave New World,” I found myself taken aback by Sabra’s portrayal, sparking a wave of discontent among fellow fans. Some even voiced their intention to boycott the movie. The concern stemmed from the fact that her Marvel Cinematic Universe description painted her as a former Black Widow and a trusted ally to President Thaddeus Ross, without any allusion to her Israeli background or Mossad ties. This stirred up whispers that Marvel was whitewashing her Israeli heritage, which is something I, along with many others, deeply hoped wouldn’t be the case.

Following the debut of the trailer, sources revealed to The Wrap that while her origin wasn’t altered, it was not emphasized in the trailer instead.

The ADL then issued a statement:

It’s great to hear that Sabra will continue to represent her Israeli roots in ‘Captain America, Brave New World,’ and will still be played by the talented Shira Haas. Marvel Studios deserves recognition for standing firm against those who sought to suppress this character’s identity and history.

As a passionate gamer, I’ve been keeping an eye on the latest updates about Captain America: Brave New World, and here’s what I’ve gathered. It seems like Marvel Studios has made some changes to the character of Sabra due to certain pressures. Previously, she was known for her Jewish heritage that stemmed from Israel, but recent developments suggest that this aspect is no longer part of her backstory in the upcoming movie. Instead, it appears that Sabra is now being depicted as a former Black Widow, with her origins being rewritten. This shift has sparked discussions within the industry, and I’m eager to see how this will unfold in the final version of the film.

According to reports, Marvel Studios has apparently altered Sabra’s narrative, distancing her from her Israeli roots due to recent criticisms. Initially planned to be a mutant, the character has undergone changes and is now depicted as a former Black Widow without powers.

In the upcoming movie ‘CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD’, it appears Marvel Studios has chosen to eliminate any references suggesting Ruth/Sabra is of Israeli origin, due to recent criticism. Previously, she was depicted as a Mutant, but now she will instead be a powerless ex-Black Widow character. (via @DanielRPK)

Looking at the responses to this unverified report, it appears that there’s predominantly a negative feeling towards it, with numerous supporters advocating for the elimination of the character entirely.

Why not just REMOVE HER COMPLETELY???

Never should’ve added her to the movie in the first place.

Her actress is still a zionist who posted stereotypes about Palestinians lmao

Why couldn’t they remove her in general?

It would have been better to exclude her altogether, as there are ex-Black Widows available due to the Black Widow movie, and if you desired a mutant character, there are plenty of other options to select instead. Alternatively, it might not have been wise to include her at all in the first place.

Due to the unpredictable political situation, it’s tough to meet the desires and standards of fans. Regardless if Sabra’s history remains the same or changes, Marvel Studios may encounter criticism online, with claims that they are endorsing genocide or displaying antisemitism.
