When Marvel Rivals made its debut on December 6, 2024, it didn’t merely appear; it burst onto the gaming world with a bang. Intrigued gamers left their regular games behind to explore this fresh hero shooter developed by Netease. What they encountered wasn’t just another game—it was a test. The mechanics, strategies, and depth captivated people almost immediately.
On the third day, Marvel Rivals astonishingly reached a staggering figure of 480,990 players. Remarkably, it maintained this high level afterward. Unlike most games that rapidly decline in popularity, this one barely faltered. Even on Christmas Day, the slowest day, it had an impressive 306,584 players, as reported by SteamDB. By the close of Season 0, daily peak numbers surged once more above 400,000, with January 8 boasting a noteworthy 438,502 players.
Streamers found it hard to overlook this phenomenon. Some, such as FaZe Swagg, abandoned their routine games in the middle of their streams. Notably, Swagg departed from Warzone following encounters with cheaters and swiftly moved on to Marvel Rivals. Other games experienced a ripple effect too. The viewership on Twitch for Overwatch 2 significantly decreased as players migrated en masse towards this emerging titan.
Not only is Marvel Rivals leading the gaming rankings, but it’s also raking in substantial profits. According to GameLook, the game garnered approximately $54.5 million on Steam, $27.2 million on PlayStation, and $2.7 million on Xbox within its first month, totalling roughly $100 million worldwide. For a debut, these earnings are truly remarkable.
As Season 1 approaches, there’s no sign of excitement waning. It could be the robust gameplay or the absence of formidable rivals, but Marvel Rivals is clearly demonstrating its staying power.
