“The Dark Phoenix Saga” is one of the most significant stories in Marvel Comics history, starting with Uncanny X-Men #129, which came out on October 16, 1979. Created by the legendary team of Chris Claremont and John Byrne, the story details the beginning of Jean Grey’s tragic transformation, a storyline that has been revisited in many movies and TV shows. To celebrate the issue’s anniversary, Marvel has released a new animated short, hosted by Miss Minutes from the Loki series, which recounts how the Phoenix became corrupted. You can watch the video below.
This one comic book was a turning point for *Uncanny X-Men*, transforming it from a fan-favorite into Marvel’s best-selling title. While villains becoming heroes was common, the idea of heroes turning evil was rare. The story culminated in the death of Jean Grey, which shocked comic book fans. But that wasn’t all – the issue also introduced two important characters, Kitty Pryde and Emma Frost, also known as the White Queen. Seeing the ’70s X-Men animated in this video is fantastic, and it makes us hope Disney+ will create an *X-Men ’79* series to complement *X-Men ’97*.
The story of “The Dark Phoenix Saga” has been adapted into live-action movies twice – in *X-Men: The Last Stand* and *X-Men: Dark Phoenix* – but neither version fully captured the depth of the original story, which is better suited for a longer format. The most faithful adaptation actually came from the ’90s *X-Men: The Animated Series*. While it’s unlikely the Marvel Cinematic Universe will try again, the MCU did revisit Galactus with *The Fantastic Four: First Steps*, and that worked out well. Luckily, the comic books will always be available for fans to enjoy.
