In the month of June, enthusiasts of Marvel comics can look forward to a fresh tale penned by two renowned comic writers. The duo, Joe Quesada and Christopher Priest, are reuniting for a six-issue series titled “Marvel Knights: The Future Awaits“.
The narrative unfolds within a future iteration of the Marvel Universe. Events transpire primarily in Wakanda, where significant upheavals are underway. Notably, T’Challa, the revered King of Wakanda, has perished, leaving behind advanced technology, the precious metal vibranium, and hidden truths that could potentially reshape reality as we know it.
In T’Challa’s absence, the world faces peril. A power struggle ensues as Wakanda prepares to choose its new ruler. The victor of this contest will guide Wakanda towards a future the creators have named “The Future World.
Christopher Priest pens the ongoing series; the artwork and stunning cover are courtesy of Joe Quesada, while colors are contributed by Richard Isanove. The debut issue is set to drop on June 4th.
Joe Quesada and Christopher Priest were instrumental in the debut of the initial Marvel Knights comic books way back in 1998. These narratives provided fans with a grittier, more complex perspective on Marvel characters such as Daredevil, The Punisher, Inhumans, and Black Panther.
Reflecting on the past, Quesada mentioned: “Back in September 1998, Marvel Knights Daredevil #1 made its debut. This was followed by The Punisher (2001), Inhumans (1998), and Black Panther (1998). Eight months prior to that, Jimmy Palmiotti, Nanci Dakesian, and I, along with our creative team, invested countless hours and sacrificed sleep to bring out the best books possible.
It was clear that they appeared distinct – sharper than any comics Marvel was producing then – yet in a challenging comic book market, there was no certainty that anyone would take notice. We were hopeful they’d succeed, but we didn’t foresee the massive fan response or the enduring influence Marvel Knights would exert on Marvel.
In October 2017, Christopher Priest, who is not only my friend but also a mentor and an exceptional comic book writer known for his work on Marvel Knights Black Panther, presented me with a mind-blowing idea based on his initial Marvel Knights vision of T’Challa and Wakanda. I was so intrigued that I knew I had to illustrate it, and we decided to make it even more grandiose.
He commented: “The priest created a masterpiece – an adventure that allows us, as well as the fans, to honor the original books while guiding beloved characters into uncharted and surprising territories. It’s been this entertaining to work on a project since I started Marvel Knights Daredevil (1998) #1.
As a former Editorial Assistant on Marvel Knights books over two decades ago, I’m thrilled to be part of this journey once again. Watching Joe and Priest breathe new life into this iconic series has been an absolute joy. We’ve poured our hearts into this project for quite some time now (Joe is finalizing the last page of issue #5 this week), but it still feels surreal that the world will join us in celebrating it come June!
