Marvel Kills Off Silver Surfer, Female Version Takes Over MCU

In a similar vein, as Julia Garner prepares to assume the role of the MCU’s Female Guardian of the Cosmos, Marvel Comics mirrors this development by revealing the demise of the Silver Surfer.

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the news that Marvel Studios has cast Elizabeth Olsen as the female Silver Surfer in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” set to hit theaters in July (a heads-up for potential spoilers here). Following the success of “Captain Marvel” and post-“Endgame,” the MCU has been making a conscious effort, much like its comic book counterpart, to replace beloved characters and rewrite tales from legendary creators, spanning decades, for reasons of diversity and inclusion. It seems that the Silver Surfer is next on the list.

On Thursday, it was revealed on Marvel.com that a new limited series titled “The Death of the Silver Surfer” will be released in June, penned by Greg Pak and Sumit Kumar.

What are the details?

In the “Death of the Silver Surfer,” the storyline unfolds with a heartrending conclusion for Norrin Radd, as an immense adversary emerges who proves too powerful, even for his cosmic abilities.

The statement proceeds, “The fight against this latest adversary is relentless; they aim to defeat the Guardian of the Cosmos and his comrades, the Fantastic Four. However, their fierce battle will not come without consequences: what hidden truths are concealed within the history of the Surfer’s past? Truths that Galactus alone knows?

The statement further states, “The Silver Surfer resumes his duty to protect a war-torn Earth. However, Norrin’s life is marked for destruction across the galaxy. Facing an adversary that could take away everything he has been or will become, it may be just one human life that determines the Surfer’s redemption…or downfall. If the Surfer fails, then who will control the immense Power Cosmic?

It’s interesting to note that the former Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief, Joe Quesada, is now creating a variant cover, which is quite amusing given his past stance towards Marvel Cosmic. In fact, years ago, he expressed to Newsarama that he wasn’t fond of Silver Surfer and struggled to grasp Marvel Cosmic in general. During my involvement with Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy, I was informed that Joe Q. was primarily concerned with profit margins. However, times have certainly evolved. Of course, there’s no denying Joe Q.’s artistic talent, correct?

In simpler terms, along with the release, Marvel has also unveiled a Foil cover variant created by Ron Lim, the same artist who produced the stunning Foil cover for Silver Surfer #50 in the past featuring Thanos. Other variants include works by Nick Bradshaw, Trad Moore, and a Marvel Hidden Gem Variant by John Romita Jr., which appears to be a modern adaptation of previously existing artwork.
