In simpler terms, the legal dispute between actors Blake Lively (from Gossip Girl) and Justin Baldoni (from Jane the Virgin) no longer involves Marvel Entertainment. On June 9th, Judge Lewis J. Liman granted Marvel’s petition to dismiss a subpoena and keep their private documents secret in this case.
As reported by PEOPLE, the subpoena was issued by Baldoni’s Wayfarer Parties as a means to acquire internal Marvel communications concerning the character Nicepool from Deadpool & Wolverine, which is penned by and stars Ryan Reynolds, who happens to be Lively’s spouse.
Why was Marvel involved in the first place?
Baldoni’s lawyers asserted that the character from Nicepool was designed specifically to taunt and humiliate him. In papers submitted earlier this year, Baldoni’s legal team stated that this character was a component of an overall plan to “tease, harass, belittle, intimidate or torment” him during his ongoing dispute with Lively.
On January 7, Baldoni’s legal team forwarded a preservation request letter to both Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, and Robert Iger, CEO of Disney. In this letter, they requested the preservation of any documents containing references to Baldoni.
In simpler terms, Judge Liman explained that the requested information from Marvel is no longer important to any claims or defenses being made in this case.
Initially, on April 25th, Marvel Entertainment petitioned the court for a protective order concerning their confidential documents and to invalidate a subpoena. Following the dismissal of Baldoni’s $400 million countersuit that same day, the court deemed it unnecessary to involve Marvel in the case legally.
What’s next in the Blake Lively vs. Justin Baldoni case?
Although the countersuit was rejected, Judge Liman indicated that Baldoni had the option to amend and resubmit specific allegations by June 23rd, should he decide to persist with his case.
The counterclaim initially demanding $400 million alleges that Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Leslie Sloane (their publicist), and Vision PR, Inc., were involved in defamation, civil blackmail, and other offenses.
In reaction to Lively’s legal action that accuses sexual harassment and retaliation, Baldoni submitted a response. This lawsuit also requests treble and punitive damages. The trial for Lively vs. Wayfarer Studios et al. has been scheduled for March 2026.
