Marvel Finally Recasting Black Panther Claims Rumor

There are reports suggesting that Marvel intends to replace Black Panther for the upcoming films like “Avengers: Doomsday”, “Avengers: Secret Wars”, and “Black Panther 3”. This decision has been confirmed since the latter is currently being developed.

What does the rumor say?

The rumor comes via Jeff Sneider who says:

Marvel plans to find a new actor for the role of Black Panther’s character, T’Challa, prior to the upcoming ‘Avengers’ films and director Ryan Coogler’s ‘Black Panther 3’.

What happened with Black Panther?

Chadwick Boseman first appeared as Black Panther in “Captain America: Civil War” back in 2016, followed by his leading role in the 2018 film “Black Panther”. Both movies raked in over a billion dollars at the box office. After that, he starred in “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame”, which also grossed more than a billion dollars each. Unfortunately, Boseman’s portrayal of T-Challa came to an end with his appearance in the animated series “What If…?” on Disney+.

Marvel pushed forward with “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” featuring Letitia Wright reprising her role as Shuri, taking over the mantle of the Black Panher. However, the film fell short of expectations and only made around a billion dollars at the box office. Fans have since started petitions, requesting Marvel to consider recasting for future projects (more details soon).

What happened with Chadwick Boseman?

In August of 2020, Chadwick Boseman passed away at the age of 43 following a long battle with cancer, which he’d been diagnosed with in 2016. He chose to keep his illness private throughout his fight against the disease.

What about recasting?

Feige says not recasting

After the demise of Boseman, Kevin Feige expressed that they would not replace him when he announced Black Panther 2 in December of 2020. In simpler terms, they won’t find another actor to play Black Panther following Chadwick Boseman’s passing.

I’d like to express my heartfelt condolences for the profound loss of a cherished friend and valued member of the Marvel Studios family, Chadwick Boseman. His exceptional acting skills and impactful personality touched each one of us both professionally and personally. The way he embodied T’Challa, the Black Panther, is nothing short of iconic, surpassing any previous portrayals of this character in Marvel’s history.

“Because we’re committed to preserving Chad’s contribution to our project as the king of Wakanda, we won’t change his character. Instead, we plan to delve deeper into the world of Wakanda and its diverse characters that were introduced in the initial film. The writer/director, Ryan Coogler, is currently working on the sequel, and it will be released in theaters on July 8, 2022.”

Feige says too soon to recast

Following the announcement of Black Panther 2, fans speculated about possible recasting. However, during an interview with Empire Magazine in September 2022, Kevin Feige emphasized that such a decision was premature, as he felt it was still too early for such discussions.

It seemed premature to replace [Chadwick Boseman’s character] so soon, as we strive to reflect the real world through Marvel’s stories. Stan Lee often emphasized this point, reminding us that our extraordinary characters and tales still carry a relatable human aspect. The passing of Chad is still fresh in everyone’s minds, and Ryan has skillfully incorporated this sentiment into the narrative.

The discussions centered entirely on deciding ‘What’s our next move?’ and figuring out how Chadwick’s legacy, along with his contributions to making Wakanda and the Black Panther into inspiring, symbolic ideals, could be further developed. That was essentially the focus of the talks.

Marvel producer says they will never recast

In simpler terms, Nate Moore, a former Marvel producer, stated that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) will not feature the character T’Challa again, given Chadwick Boseman’s passing. This comment was made public in the year 2021.

I’m making it clear that T’Challa will not appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) 616. This isn’t a matter of speculation, but honesty. When Chadwick Boseman tragically passed away, we had an urgent discussion with Ryan Coogler about how to proceed without the character. Recasting was never an option we considered. The difficulty of ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ lies in telling a story that continues the franchise without T’Challa.

Chadwick Boseman’s family supports recasting of Black Panther

Yet, in December of 2021, following a fan-initiated petition, Boseman’s brother expressed approval for recasting the role of Black Panther. Derrick Boseman stated to TMZ then that Chadwick himself would have wanted the part filled again.

CB’s buddy, Derrick Boseman, shares with TMZ… indeed, he believes T’Challa should continue in the ‘Black Panther’ series, and if this means selecting another actor to embody the king of Wakanda – a role that Chadwick brought to life so memorably – then he is open to that possibility.

According to Derrick, Chadwick felt that his character, T’Challa, would have shared this belief too – that is, T’Challa was more than just an individual to him. In essence, Derrick believes that Chadwick recognized the impact and power the character held.

Derrick expresses that it’s incredibly significant for young African-Americans to witness a Black king, particularly in a heroic superhero role like in Marvel movies. He suggests that by swiftly eliminating that character following Chadwick’s death, they are essentially denying black children a source of inspiration as a role model.

Derrick expresses concern about the lack of positive role models for young black children today. He believes hip-hop often magnifies certain social issues, and Marvel can help balance that by reintroducing T’Challa – a character whom he views as embodying the potential of Black people.

Black Panther 3 details

As for the upcoming “Black Panther” movie number three, neither a release date nor any storyline specifics have been revealed yet. However, it’s confirmed that director Ryan Coogler is back on board and is busy working on the script at present.

Denzel Washington let it slip that Coogler is writing a part for him in Black Panther 3.

It has been confirmed that Black Panther 3 is being developed following the report of Nate Moore’s departure from Marvel Studios.
