Word on the street is that Marvel plans to replace Black Panther in upcoming films such as “Avengers: Doomsday”, “Avengers: Secret Wars”, and “Black Panther 3”, all of which are currently in production.
What does the rumor say?
The rumor comes via Jeff Sneider who says:
Marvel intends to find a new actor for the character T’Challa, who is the Black Panther, before the upcoming ‘Avengers’ films and director Ryan Coogler’s ‘Black Panther 3’.
What happened with Black Panther?
As a die-hard film fan, I can’t help but reflect on the groundbreaking journey of Chadwick Boseman, who first donned the Black Panther suit in “Captain America: Civil War” back in 2016. His electrifying performance then led him to star in the blockbuster movie “Black Panther” in 2018. Both films surpassed the billion-dollar mark at the box office. Subsequently, he graced our screens as T’Challa in “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” both of which also raked in staggering revenues beyond a billion dollars. Sadly, Boseman’s final portrayal of T-Challa will be in the animated series “What If…?” on Disney+.
As a movie enthusiast, I found myself diving into the world of Marvel once again with “Black Panter: Wakanda Forever,” this time with Letitia Wright portraying the role of Shuri as the new Black Panther. However, the film didn’t live up to expectations, falling significantly short of earning a billion dollars at the box office. Unsatisfied fans have even started petitions asking Marvel Studios to reconsider their casting choices in this particular storyline.
What happened with Chadwick Boseman?
Reflecting on August 2020, I find myself still moved by the untimely passing of Chadwick Boseman, who left us at only 43 years old, a victim of colon cancer. This formidable actor, known for his powerful performances, was diagnosed with the disease back in 2016 and fought valiantly against it in private until his final days. Despite the immense challenge he faced, Boseman never allowed his illness to overshadow his remarkable career on-screen.
What about recasting?
Feige says not recasting
After the passing of Boseman, Kevin Feige mentioned during the announcement of Black Panther 2 in December 2020 that they would not replace him with another actor.
I’d like to express my heartfelt condolences for the tragic passing of a cherished friend and esteemed member of the Marvel Studios family, Chadwick Boseman. He was an extraordinarily gifted actor whose influence extended far beyond the screen, impacting us deeply professionally and personally. His portrayal of T’Challa, the Black Panther, is nothing short of iconic and surpasses any previous representation of this character within Marvel’s history.
“We’ve decided not to change the character because of this reason. To celebrate Chad’s contribution to our Wakanda universe by creating the king of Wakanda, we’re planning to delve deeper into the world of Wakanda and its diverse characters from the initial film. Ryan Coogler, the writer/director, is currently working on the sequel, and you can expect to see it in theaters on July 8, 2022.”
Feige says too soon to recast
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I’ve been pondering about the possibility of a recast for Black Panther 2 ever since the sequel was announced. However, in an interview with Empire Magazine back in September 2022, Marvel boss Kevin Feige made it clear that such a move is premature, as he emphasized that it’s still too early for any discussions about recasting T’Challa.
It seemed premature to replace [Chad’s character]. As Stan Lee often said, Marvel characters reflect the world around us. We’ve always aimed to keep a relatable and human touch in our work, even with our fantastical stories. The world is still mourning Chad, so Ryan chose to incorporate that emotion into the narrative.
The discussions primarily revolved around the question, ‘What’s our next move?’ They also focused on how Chadwick’s legacy and his contributions towards elevating Wakanda and the Black Panther into inspiring, symbolic ideals could persist. This was essentially the main topic of our conversations.
Marvel producer says they will never recast
It has been confirmed by Marvel producer Nate Moore, who has since left his position at Marvel, that the character T’Challa will not appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) anymore, following the passing of actor Chadwick Boseman. In a statement made in 2021, Moore expressed this sentiment.
I’m making it clear that T’Challa will not appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe 616. This isn’t a guess or an uncertainty, it’s a fact. When Chadwick Boseman passed away, we had a serious discussion with Ryan Coogler about how to proceed without T’Challa. We didn’t have weeks to decide; it was immediate. The conversation was centered around finding a way to carry on the franchise without that character. Recasting was never an option. The task for ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ is telling a story without T’Challa.
Chadwick Boseman’s family supports recasting of Black Panther
In contrast, towards the end of 2021, following a fan petition, Boseman’s brother expressed his approval for the idea of recasting Black Panther. Derrick Boseman stated to TMZ then that Chadwick himself would have wanted the role filled.
CB’s buddy, Derrick Boseman, shared with TMZ… indeed, he believes the character T’Challa should continue in the ‘Black Panther’ series, and if this means selecting another actor to play the king of Wakanda – a role that Chadwick brought to life so memorably – then it can certainly be done.
Derrick shares that he feels Chadwick was convinced his character, T’Challa, would have agreed with this as well. In essence, Chadwick understood that the character of T’Challa represented more than just one individual. To put it simply, Chadwick recognized the impact and power that the role held.
Derrick points out that it’s incredibly empowering for young African-Americans to see a Black king, particularly in a superhero role like in Marvel movies. He suggests that by swiftly retiring the character after Chadwick Boseman’s death, they are essentially denying black children a significant role model.
Derrick expresses concern about the limited number of inspiring role models for young black kids currently available. He believes hip-hop often highlights negative aspects of society, and he hopes Marvel can help balance this by reintroducing T’Challa – a character whom he views as embodying the potential of Black people.
Black Panther 3 details
As for the upcoming third installment of “Black Panther,” neither a release date nor any specific plot details have been revealed yet. However, we do know that Ryan Coogler is set to return as director and is currently working on the screenplay.
Denzel Washington let it slip that Coogler is writing a part for him in Black Panther 3.
Marvel Studios has confirmed that the production of Black Panther 3 is underway following the announcement of Nate Moore’s departure from Marvel.
