As the release of Avengers: Secret Wars draws nearer, there’s growing chatter about a potential Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) reboot. Will Marvel opt for a fresh start or carry on with the current universe? Despite confirming a “new age of mutants,” Marvel executive Brad Winderbaum hints that a full-blown reboot might not be feasible.
“You can’t really fully reboot anything”
During discussions about the upcoming release of “Daredevil: Born Again,” Marvel’s TV chief, Brad Winderbaum, was asked if reboots are ever considered. Winderbaum responded that he can’t speak for the movies, but as a passionate comic book enthusiast, he isn’t fond of reboots and used DC Comics as an illustration.
“Regarding the details about upcoming features, you should consult Kevin [Feige] as I work on the TV side. Despite our different roles, we share the same cinematic universe. To clarify, I’m a comic book enthusiast who started reading them at age 12. I’ve observed how things change when full reboots happen within comic companies. The reality is that complete reboots in DC, specifically, often feel unsatisfying because the classic characters always seem to resurface. Rebooting a living, evolving fictional universe is challenging due to the immense fan attachment and affection for the stories already told.”

Marvel TV retooled
As a passionate fan, I must admit that it was quite unexpected when the director of “Secret Invasion” shared that Marvel explicitly instructed him not to delve into the comics. However, he couldn’t resist and ended up reading them anyway. The aftermath of “Secret Invasion” left many fans, including myself, feeling disheartened. In light of its poor performance, Marvel made significant changes within their TV division, one of which was a reworking of “Daredevil: Born Again”.
Marvel TV is now focusing on series that can be released yearly, similar to traditional television, meaning multiple seasons. It also appears that Marvel (Disney) has significantly cut the budgets of its new shows, reducing costs from $200 million for series like Secret Invasion and She-Hulk. Unfortunately, these cuts include projects like Nova, Strange Academy, and Terror Inc. The good news is that if you’re a fan of street-level heroes, you’ll likely get more shows similar to Daredevil: Born Again. Season 2 begins filming next week.
James Bond the MCU?
Regarding a possible Marvel Cinematic Universe reboot, I’ve often pondered that they should emulate the method of the James Bond series—maintaining the characters while introducing new actors to portray them. This could potentially occur post-“Avengers: Secret Wars,” scheduled for release in 2027.
At the moment, it seems the strategy is to have Robert Downey Jr. reprise his role as Doctor Doom for the film titled Avengers: Doomsday, while Chris Evans’ return is also speculated. I believe the success of Captain America: Brave New World demonstrates that fans aren’t keen on substitute characters. If Marvel were to follow the approach taken with James Bond, who could potentially take over as Captain America and Iron Man?
