Marvel has revealed the first official synopsis for Avengers: Doomsday, giving fans a glimpse of what’s coming in the next major MCU event.
The new Marvel movie, scheduled for release on December 18, 2026, will unite heroes from throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe to battle a powerful new enemy. Disney revealed a brief description of the plot at a recent event in China.

Avengers: Doomsday is the next installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Avengers: Endgame (2019), kicking off Phase Six. The movie is being directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, and the script is written by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely. Marvel Studios and AGBO are producing the film, and Walt Disney Studios will handle distribution.
The film boasts a huge cast of stars, including Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, and many more. Robert Downey Jr. joins the ensemble as the new villain, Doctor Doom.
The next story will bring together Earth’s mightiest heroes – the Avengers, along with the Wakandans, Fantastic Four, New Avengers, and X-Men – to face a massive threat from Doctor Doom that spreads across multiple universes. This event is designed to link together characters and stories from past Marvel Cinematic Universe films and movies originally produced by 20th Century Fox.
The movie went through many revisions during its development. Initially, the plan was to end Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with two films, *The Kang Dynasty* and *Secret Wars*. Actor Jonathan Majors was originally going to return as the villain Kang the Conqueror, but legal troubles resulted in him being replaced.
So, Marvel really surprised everyone by bringing back the Russo brothers to direct, and even more shockingly, they cast Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom! This led to the movie getting a new title: *Doomsday*. They started filming back in April at Pinewood Studios in England, and did some additional shooting on location in both England and Bahrain.
The next movie, *Secret Wars*, will be released on December 17, 2027, and will continue the story of the multiverse.
