Marvel Destroyed the Comic Book Containing Donald Trump Slur, but a Copy Survived

As a lifelong Marvel fan who has followed every twist and turn of the comic book juggernaut since I was a wide-eyed kid with a stack of back issues, this recent revelation about the censored Donald Trump joke in Marvel Two-In-One is nothing short of mind-blowing.

The U.S. presidential election has concluded, a fact that many will undoubtedly welcome. Now, we can resume our usual routines and leave the election-related tension in the past. However, as with most facets of life, the entertainment industry too has felt the impact of the elections. Though the narrative we’re sharing now isn’t directly linked to the current ones, it does touch upon politics.

Indeed, it’s possible you’ve come across this tidbit before: Seven years ago, Marvel made alterations to a comic book that was already produced, which included a joke about Donald Trump. This could have been due to the fact that at the time, Isaac Perlmutter, who was both Marvel’s chair and a colleague of Trump, might have taken offense. However, there’s more to it than that.

It wasn’t meant to be published, but surprisingly, some editions of the comic book with the joke were secretly printed. Most of these copies were destroyed, but a few somehow reached the fans, making this an intriguing situation!

In the year 2017, it was planned for the Marvel Two-In-One comic book to include a jab at Donald Trump. This was during the timeframe following the 2016 elections in which Trump defeated Hillary Clinton.

In the comic book, Spider-Man and the Thing were the focus of a joke. Spider-Man teased the Thing by saying, “You fool! I’m here to back you up! The world’s second most famous orange beast!” You can take a look at the original panel right over here: [Comic Book Panel Link]

However, if you’re familiar with the comic or the initial tale from Bleeding Cool, you might recall that the illustration, upon its release, appeared as follows:

Indeed, the joke ended up being removed from the comic, but fortunately, we managed to learn about its existence due to the initial sketch leaking on the internet.

In the opening, I’d like to share my perspective: Given the unexpected win of Donald Trump, it seems that the creators at Marvel chose caution over creativity. They didn’t want to stir up trouble with their powerful boss, Isaac Perlmutter, who has a close relationship with Trump. It was a practical decision, prioritizing pragmatism above all else.

Although the official release never happened, it’s clear that approximately 47,000 copies of the comic containing the original joke were physically produced. However, these comics were supposed to be destroyed. Yet, as you can see in the image below, some copies apparently managed to survive the destruction process.

As a long-time collector of rare comics, I must say that this particular copy is quite exceptional. To put it plainly, it’s one of those pieces that don’t come around often. Luckily for fellow enthusiasts, BleedingCool has the scoop on its availability, as it appears to be up for sale. Keep in mind, though, if you decide to acquire this gem, you’ll want to act quickly, as such treasures tend to vanish fast.

Given this information, it’s clear that the destruction of the comic book was meticulously carried out, leaving only one known original. It’s possible, however, that additional copies exist, but their owners either choose not to reveal them or are unaware they possess them.
