After significant postponements in the release dates for “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Secret Wars”, the repercussions of these changes are now being felt in Hollywood.
This involves postponed Marvel Cinematic Universe premiere schedules, a hold-up in Kevin Feige’s grand X-Men strategies, and whispers about Disney CEO Bob Iger’s discontentment.
What’s going on?
MCU post-Endgame has been a bust
In simpler terms, ever since the release of Endgame, it seems that the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t been as successful as before. Many films and series on Disney+ haven’t met expectations, with fewer fans tuning in and less money being spent.
The latest Marvel films by Feige, such as Thunderbolts and Captain America: Brave New World, have not been successful. In fact, Disney reported that Captain America: Brave New World is a loss for them. Currently, projections show that Thunderbolts will earn less than Captain America 4. The upcoming Fantastic Four movie also seems uncertain due to stiff competition from James Gunn’s Superman and Jurassic World Rebirth during the summer season.
Avengers delayed, MCU release dates pulled
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news about the Avengers saga. Last Thursday, Disney made an official adjustment to their release schedule that has us all buzzing! The much-anticipated film, Avengers: Doomsday, which was initially slated for May 1, is now set to hit the screens on December 18, 2026. And This means we have a bit more patience to endure before we can witness these epic battles unfold on the big screen. Bring it on, Avengers!
Furthermore, Disney has taken out three unnamed Marvel films from their release schedule, labeling them as “Untitled Disney” productions instead.

X-Men pushed to 2028
The changes to the Avengers schedule also mean the X-Men reboot is getting pushed.
Due to the release of “Secret Wars” scheduled for December 2027, it’s clear that Kevin Feige’s anticipated “new era of mutants” won’t commence before 2028 at the very least. Marvel has three vacant slots in 2028, and one is speculated to be reserved for an X-Men film.

Bob Iger not happy
With Marvel struggling, it’s now being said that Bob Iger is disappointed.
Previously, Iger acknowledged that streaming has cost Disney billions, partly due to Star Wars, and announced a scaling down of Marvel and Star Wars productions. This implies less projects will be undertaken with lower budgets, potentially affecting series like Daredevil.
A whisper circulates that there may be disagreements between Feige and Iger regarding the approach for the X-Men movie. It’s said that Feige is inclined towards incorporating a strong political narrative, whereas Iger prefers a more conventional, action-packed blockbuster style.
According to industry expert Jeff Sneider, it’s been indicated that Bob Iger isn’t particularly pleased about the limited Marvel content slated for 2026, as only one Marvel Studios film has been confirmed at this point (namely, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is a Sony production).
…”It’s said that Disney’s Bob Iger may feel quite displeased if he can only release a single Marvel film, or approximately 1.25 movies, next year – especially since it would be toward the end of the year. Even if it is an Avengers movie featuring Robert Downey Jr.’s transition from Iron Man to Doctor Doom, this might not meet his expectations.
It seems Iger anticipated that there would be another Marvel film slated for release in 2026, beyond both Spider-Man 4 and Avengers: Doomsday.
However, that now seems unlikely, as any 2026 film would already need to be in production.
As a diehard film fan, it’s noteworthy to mention that I, along with the cinema community, am looking forward to 2026 when Bob Iger steps down from Disney. This departure happens two years prior to Kevin Feige’s planned launch of the X-Men universe within Disney. As of now, a successor hasn’t been officially announced, but speculation swirls that the news will break early in 2026.
MCU on hiatus
In summary, there will be an approximately 18-month break in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) starting from the release of the Fantastic Four movie in July 2025, with the next MCU film, Doomsday, being released in December 2026.
As a devoted fan, I’m eagerly hoping that this pause provides Feige with the opportunity to steer Marvel Cinematic Universe back on course. Yet, one can’t help but wonder, given the dynamic nature of fandom, how many of us will remain loyal throughout this journey.
