I was really excited about Marvel Cosmic Invasion – the idea of a classic, space-faring Marvel game sounded awesome. But honestly, I was disappointed. It felt like they prioritized pushing a certain agenda over just letting the story and gameplay shine.
Honestly, I was immediately worried when I saw Phyla-Vell was a playable character. As a long-time fan of Marvel Cosmic, I know she’s not a favorite among fans, and it felt…off. It seemed like the developers just needed an LGBTQ+ character, and instead of building on someone already popular like Moondragon, they shoehorned Phyla in. It didn’t feel organic, and that was a big disappointment for me.
Initially, I wasn’t bothered. They were just referring to her as “Phyla,” and that didn’t bother me. But when the developers showed off her abilities, that’s when I realized things were a problem.

If you haven’t followed the character’s story, Phyla-Vell was a key figure in Marvel’s attempt to refresh older heroes. She took over the role of Quasar from Wendell Vaughn, and Marvel significantly changed the character’s background and personality to make the transition work.
The writers killed off Wendell, completely changed the power structure that Mark Gruenwald had carefully built over years, and disregarded decades of established backstory. Gruenwald was known for personally sending fans detailed explanations of Quasar’s abilities, but Marvel chose to ignore all of that history and effort.

This all started around 2006. I, along with other passionate fans, began advocating for these characters. Our efforts eventually led to the creation of this website. We sent petitions to Marvel, along with fan-made items like shirts and artwork—and even a famous Quasar cake! Nova fans went a step further and mailed Kevin Feige a care package. It was a unique moment in time when fan engagement looked very different.
Marvel actually listened.

Wendell Vaughn returned as Quasar, and Phyla was reimagined as Martyr. For a brief time, it united fans of cosmic Marvel stories – a rare and wonderful moment!
After Disney acquired Marvel, things started to change for the worse. They began rapidly replacing characters, and Quasar, in particular, was repeatedly replaced with updated female versions. This is where we stand now.

In the Marvel Cosmic Invasion game, Phyla’s abilities include a move called “Quasar Blitz.” She’s designed with the Quasar costume and wields the Quasar sword. It feels like the developers simply recycled existing elements.
Wendell Vaughn is not in the game.
To be honest, when I launched this site, we actively helped Marvel promote their cosmic-themed comics, like Guardians of the Galaxy and Nova, and the entire effort to bring those stories back. The editor leading that push came from a different department, initially unfamiliar with cosmic books, but quickly learned and connected with the fans. He was the one who reintroduced Wendell Vaughn as Quasar. Interestingly, he’s now a Vice President of Creative at Marvel Games.

So thanks, Bill.
You’ve made my decision to skip this game loud and clear.
