Marvel Comics Ditches Captain Marvel: ‘HIGHER. FURTHER. FORGOTTEN.’

Marvel Comics is quietly walking things back.

Carol Danvers, known as Captain Marvel, will be revisiting her roots as Ms. Marvel in an upcoming limited series. The series will feature her iconic, original costume that Marvel had previously moved away from.

This decision follows years of attempts to make Captain Marvel a leading figure in both Marvel comics and the MCU, efforts that ultimately didn’t gain lasting traction.

The contrast is striking and perfectly summed up by Marvel’s own words for the show: “HIGHER. FURTHER. FORGOTTEN.”

Carol Danvers Was Ms. Marvel Before Marvel Went Woke

For many years, Carol Danvers was known as Ms. Marvel. More recently, Marvel changed her name to Captain Marvel. Originally, Marvel had planned to reintroduce the original Captain Marvel during the Secret Invasion storyline, properly acknowledging the character’s history.

That plan was scrapped.

Marvel made Carol Danvers Captain Marvel and then introduced Kamala Khan as the new Ms. Marvel. This fit well with Disney’s plans for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, establishing Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel as a key character for future films.

That strategy didn’t age well.

The MCU Experiment Failed

Captain Marvel reached over $1 billion in box office earnings, but its success was largely due to its release timing. It came out between two hugely popular Avengers movies—Infinity War and Endgame—benefiting from the high level of excitement surrounding the Marvel Cinematic Universe at the time.

Once that momentum vanished, reality set in.

The new Marvel movie, The Marvels, starring Brie Larson and Iman Vellani, had a disappointing run in theaters. It performed worse than any other film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with significantly fewer people buying tickets than expected.

Disney+’s Ms. Marvel series and Marvel Zombies both struggled to find an audience. Viewership numbers were low, and excitement quickly faded. Marvel attempted to introduce significant changes, but fans largely didn’t respond positively.

Marvel Comics Brings Back Ms. Marvel

Now Marvel Comics is hitting reverse.

The comic series Captain Marvel: Dark Past revisits Carol Danvers’ time as Ms. Marvel, exploring forgotten memories and hidden secrets from a period of her life Marvel previously attempted to conceal.

The story heavily focuses on looking back at the past and dealing with regrets. Carol Danvers is pushed to revisit her time as Ms. Marvel when a new danger reveals a troubling family secret connected to her past. It emphasizes that the past continues to have an impact, even though Marvel has attempted to move forward.

The iconic Ms. Marvel costume has returned! Could we see Brie Larson wearing it in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Paul Jenkins is writing this series, and he’s returning to Marvel after working on ‘The Sentry.’ Lucas Werneck is providing the artwork. Jenkins has said he’s excited to explore Carol Danvers’ past as Ms. Marvel, Warbird, and Binary, seeing it as a valuable and interesting history to draw from.

Marvel might try to present this as an exploration of a character’s inner life, but the fact that it’s happening now speaks volumes and tells us more than any official statement.

For years, Marvel focused on versions of Captain Marvel and Kamala Khan that didn’t resonate with fans. Now, they’re shifting back to the popular portrayal of Carol Danvers that audiences already enjoy.

Higher. Further. Forgotten.
