Marvel Changed Sentry’s THUNDERBOLTS* Backstory Thanks to SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME

Among the fresh characters introduced in Thunderbolts*/New Avengers, Lewis Pullman’s portrayal of Bob Reynolds, better known as the Sentry, stands out as particularly captivating. Interestingly, the MCU’s version of Bob closely follows his comic book origins, except for one significant deviation. In the original comics, the Sentry was a globally renowned superhero in the vein of Superman, debuting early in the Marvel Universe. Using his immense powers, he made the world forget that he ever existed. However, this key aspect wasn’t incorporated into the MCU. The reason behind this omission can be attributed to Spider-Man and Doctor Strange.

In an interview with Marvel.com, Thunderbolts director Jack Schreier shared that one part of the character’s origin wasn’t utilized because Marvel Studios had already executed a similar concept at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home. To refresh your memory, Doctor Strange wiped everyone’s memory about Peter Parker at the film’s conclusion, thereby protecting Spider-Man’s secret identity. Schreier humorously acknowledged, “Obviously, we couldn’t tell that same story because of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Thanks, Jon,” referring to the movie’s director, Jon Watts.

The intriguing aspects of Sentry’s origin story lie less in his hidden past and more in his struggle with mental health issues, a theme that resonates across both his comic book version and his appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Unlike some other MCU characters like Hawkeye or Shang-Chi, Sentry seems to be more true to his comics roots. The Thunderbolts series effectively captured many aspects of Sentry’s characterization. However, for fans yearning for more of Sentry’s storyline, they might find it in the character of Peter Parker, as certain elements of Sentry’s tale are intertwined with his.
