For the first time in twenty years, DC and Marvel Comics have started collaborating again. They began by reprinting some of their older, popular team-up stories. Then, they created new adventures featuring characters like Batman and Deadpool, and have plans for Superman and Spider-Man to team up too. But arguably their biggest collaboration is JLA/Avengers. Written by Kurt Busiek, who’s known for his work on The Avengers, and illustrated by the legendary George Pérez, this series has been hard to find for years. Fortunately, DC and Marvel are reprinting all four issues this summer, with new cover variations, as reported by AIPT.

I’m so excited these classic issues are coming back! For those who don’t know, this four-part series originally came out in 2003, and it’s being reprinted this summer in the exact same format as the originals – same covers, everything! Marvel’s handling issues #1 in May and #3 in July, and DC will release #2 in June and #4 in August. What makes this series so special is the history behind it. George Pérez actually started planning a Justice League/Avengers team-up way back in 1983, even drawing some pages, but it fell apart due to disagreements between Marvel and DC. Then, twenty years later, they decided to actually do it, and brought Pérez back to finish what he started! It really felt like the definitive version of both teams, and it was a massive success when it first came out.
With these recent reprints, many fans are hoping for a new, complete collection of JLA/Avengers, possibly a large, hardcover edition. While DC and Marvel briefly brought back a limited trade paperback version in 2022 to celebrate the life of George Perez, it quickly sold out and is no longer available. However, the new reprints suggest a more substantial collection might be on the way.
The DC/Marvel team-up, JLA/Avengers, is a classic that should always be available, especially for that iconic moment of Superman lifting Thor’s hammer. Now that DC and Marvel are on good terms again, could we please get a JLA/X-Men collaboration written by Grant Morrison and illustrated by Jim Lee? It would be amazing, and fans would be incredibly grateful.
