Martin Scorsese has stopped going to movie theaters these days not out of dislike for films, but due to his discomfort with modern audience behavior. He expressed this in a recent conversation with his longtime friend and film critic Peter Travers, who recently started his own blog, “The Travers Take,” following his departure from ABC and “Good Morning America.
For quite some time, Travers has been acquainted with Scorsese. He inquired directly from him about why he no longer goes to watch movies in cinemas. Unreservedly, Scorsese expressed his thoughts. As reported by Travers, “I questioned the master about his avoidance of theater screenings and he unleashed a fury reminiscent of Raging Bull, lamenting audiences who talk on their phones during the movie, leave to get snacks and massive sodas, and create a noise level that overpowers the actors’ dialogue.
Indeed, as a youngster, I too found myself chatting during films with my peers. However, our conversations were never mere distractions; they revolved around the movie itself and the lively debates we’d have about the intricacies we uncovered.
Instead, Scorsese now opts to watch movies from the comfort of his own home. His New York residence boasts a private cinema, adorned with film posters, memorabilia, and a large screen ideal for displaying classic black-and-white films.
Apart from his main workspace, he additionally boasts a secondary viewing area in his upstairs office and an extensive collection of films personal to him. This particular setup has played a significant role in his life for quite some time.
Via his home setup, Scorsese continues to stay abreast of contemporary films. He’s been highly commended for his recent film choices such as “TÁR”, “Pearl”, “Hereditary”, “Nosferatu”, and “I Saw the TV Glow”.
It’s quite clear that he’s feeling annoyed. Going to a movie theater today can be rather challenging. Frequently, people are using their phones, chatting during the film, or getting up for snacks. For someone like Scorsese, who regards movies as something precious, these recurring disturbances mar the enjoyment.
It’s evident that he’s feeling irritated. Movie-going today can be tough going. People often use their phones, chat during the film, or leave to buy snacks. For a filmmaker like Scorsese, who values movies deeply, these constant interruptions undermine the experience.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but reminisce about the good old days when cinemas were our sanctuaries, transporting us into different worlds through stories. However, these days, it seems nearly impossible to immerse myself in a film without constant distractions. For me, and many others like Martin Scorsese, staying home and enjoying a movie in peace feels like the perfect escape.
