Martin Scorsese, known for famously criticizing Marvel films as not being “cinema,” has unexpectedly joined a major blockbuster franchise. He’s appearing in the new season of The Mandalorian and Grogu, officially becoming part of the Star Wars universe with a voice acting role. A trailer released on Tuesday revealed Scorsese will play an Ardennian shopkeeper who has knowledge about the Hutts.

Following the popular series, The Mandalorian and Grogu continues the adventures of Din Djarin and Grogu as they journey through a fractured galaxy. Martin Scorsese makes a brief voice appearance as a four-armed, furry shopkeeper whom Mando seeks out for information. The shopkeeper is happy to help when Mando offers a New Republic coin, but quickly changes his tune when he learns the bounty hunter is tracking a Hutt, curtly stating, “Closed for the night. Thank you.” Though brief, Scorsese’s distinctive voice is instantly recognizable.
Martin Scorsese received criticism in 2019 after comparing popular blockbuster movies to theme parks. He later explained that he wasn’t questioning the skill of the people who make them. Scorsese himself has a history of doing voice work, appearing in films like Shark Tale, Mean Streets, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Killers of the Flower Moon.

Considering Martin Scorsese’s close ties with The Mandalorian’s director, Jon Favreau, it’s not surprising he’s involved. The Mandalorian and Grogu will be released in theaters on May 22nd. Pedro Pascal is back as Din Djarin, and he’s joined by Sigourney Weaver playing a pilot, Jeremy Allen White as Jabba the Hutt’s son Rotta, and Jonny Coyne as an imperial warlord. Fans are eager to see what happens next in this exciting story!
