Marlon Wayans is making it clear that Scary Movie 6 is not going to play it safe.
Marlon Wayans recently told Entertainment Weekly about his new movie, explaining that he aims to deliver genuinely funny comedy and challenge current restrictions on what jokes are considered acceptable.
He explained they’re aiming to restore humor and the traditional style of comedy. He believes the key to doing so is to stop ‘cancel culture’.
Wayans shared that the upcoming movie will be as bold and unrestrained as previous installments. He emphasized that the franchise has always poked fun at all groups, and that won’t be changing. “We’ll continue to make jokes at everyone’s expense – we don’t play favorites,” he explained. He also noted that their comedic style is rooted in their upbringing and the playful, often teasing, dynamic within their family.

The film’s trailer gives a clear sense of its comedic style, featuring jokes about topics like pronouns, politics, and the idea of “safe spaces.” A scene briefly displays the phrase, “There are no safe spaces,” driving the point home. Wayans argues that this type of humor encourages discussion rather than stifling it.
He explained that the film appeals to people of all ages. “It’s a movie for multiple generations,” he said, adding that it sparks a much-needed comedic conversation, from his generation all the way down to Gen Alpha, and that it’s something everyone can enjoy.
Wayans said making the movie was a really fun and relaxed experience. They were laughing constantly, and the actors were encouraged to improvise and have fun on set. He believes that energy and freedom really come through in the finished film.
The film features a return by original stars Anna Faris and Regina Hall. Wayans explained that it was key to reunite the cast, aiming to recapture the spirit of the early 2000s when the original movies were both successful and known for their edgy humor.
This movie is more than just a continuation of the series for Wayans; he views it as a statement about today’s society. He feels comedy shouldn’t be held back by worries about causing offense, and he’s committed to that idea, even if audiences disagree. He’s intentionally making the film with this principle in mind.
The sixth installment of Scary Movie is scheduled for release on June 5th. Keenen Ivory Wayans hopes the film will be both funny and thought-provoking, potentially sparking discussion among viewers.
