Right. So, the market. It’s doing that thing again. You know, the thing where it lurches violently, and suddenly all my carefully constructed financial projections look like they were drawn by a caffeinated toddler. It’s… unsettling. I mean, rationally, I know this happens. Everyone says so. But knowing something and feeling it are, as I’ve discovered repeatedly in life (and investing), entirely different things.
Today’s Log: Units of Cryptocurrency Lost (paper value, naturally): 7. Hours Spent Refreshing Portfolio: Approximately 18. Number of Times I Considered Selling Everything and Becoming a Beekeeper: 3. It’s a surprisingly appealing career, actually. Bees don’t seem to care about inflation.
The experts (and by experts, I mean people on the internet who definitely know more than me) keep saying “stay the course.” “Long-term strategy.” “Don’t panic sell.” Easy for them to say. They’re not staring into the abyss of their dwindling net worth at 3 AM. It’s all very well to talk about “reassessing risk tolerance” when the numbers are going up. When they’re doing a swan dive off a cliff, it feels less like financial planning and more like assisted suicide.
I’ve been trying to be disciplined, honestly. I made a list. A very detailed list. It included things like “Avoid Checking Portfolio More Than Every 30 Minutes” and “Resist the Urge to Blame Global Events on Personal Bad Luck.” It lasted approximately 17 minutes. I’m starting to suspect willpower is a myth.
The thing is, as an investor (and yes, I am an investor, despite my current state of near-hysteria), I know history suggests staying invested is the smarter move. Panic selling is usually a terrible idea. But knowing that and feeling it… see above re: willpower and the abyss. I keep reminding myself that market volatility is normal. It’s a feature, not a bug. Though honestly, sometimes it feels like a malicious coding error.
