As a dedicated follower of Marissa Bode‘s career and someone who deeply respects her strength and resilience, I wholeheartedly stand with her in her recent statement about the bullying and ableist jokes in the latest film, Wicked. As someone who has navigated life in a wheelchair, it is heartening to see her use her platform to address these issues and call for sensitivity and understanding from the audience.
In the movie Wicked, Marissa Bode voiced her disapproval over how her character was being subjected to bullying. As an actress who uses a wheelchair both in real life and in the film, she expressed unease regarding the insensitive remarks and jokes about ableism that she encountered.
On her TikTok platform, Bode discussed the character of Nessa she portrayed in the movie and expressed surprise at the audience’s humor regarding her disability, as she had anticipated receiving criticism but not jokes about it.
In the video posted by the actress on her social media account, the actress from “The No Roles Written” expressed that she had little tolerance for criticisms and jests.
During his speech to the audience, Bode shared, “The charm of art and Wicked lies in the fact that these characters and the film wouldn’t be as impactful without varying perspectives on who’s truly good or bad. It’s alright if you don’t like Nessa personally because she is a fictional character, and that’s perfectly acceptable.
She also pointed out, “Crude remarks and jokes about Nessa’s disability make people uneasy because disabilities aren’t fictional. In reality, I, Marissa, am the one who is disabled and uses a wheelchair. So, it seems easy for many of you to make these kinds of comments.
Additionally, Marissa asserted that she was already known for being a subject of jest among the crowd, long before she landed the role of Wicked. This young performer shared that she had often overheard various renditions of simple jokes about ableism.
Bode shared that she’s been subjected to the crudest humor regarding her condition. She expressed, “The jokes aren’t fresh and it often seems like they’re laughing at me, not with me, when these remarks are coming from able-bodied individuals who make light of my inability to walk.
Bode expressed that it would have been pleasing for her if the Wicked audience had shown a bit more wisdom in their response to her.
Apart from Bode, the movie stars Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and Jonathan Bailey, among others.
Wicked is running successfully in theaters.
