Mariah Carey Rewore Her Wedding Dress in 2005 Music Video; Here’s Why

In a recent disclosure, Mariah Carey unveiled the source of inspiration for her wedding gown in the 2005 We Belong Together music video. Interestingly, this dress was identical to the one she donned at her wedding to former Sony Music executive Tommy Mottola, held back in 1993.

In the latest installment of Vevo Footnotes, Carey discussed the creative inspiration behind the video where she portrayed a bride fleeing her wedding. Instead of purchasing a new dress for the scene, she opted to reuse her original Vera Wang wedding gown from her first marriage, which served as both a sensible and symbolic decision.

Instead of splurging on a brand-new wedding gown for a scene, Carey opted to use the one she already had on hand.” (Carey shared.)

By the time the video was shot, Mariah Carey had already divorced Tommy Mottola, their marriage having lasted approximately five years, with the divorce taking place in the late 90s. The song “We Belong Together” came out in 2005 under Island Records, marking a significant return for Carey following her departure from her previous label. This single spent an impressive 14 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, earning itself a place among the longest-lasting number one hits ever recorded.

Carey contemplated the visual aspects of the music video, specifically noting the stark contrast between the stylish black two-piece she donned in the storyline’s earlier parts and the eye-catching wedding dress she wore during the wedding scene. She acknowledged that the fashion brand allowed her to explore a more theatrical concept, which not only captivated fans but also boosted the song’s enduring popularity.

She mentioned, “I’m truly thrilled that they trusted me enough to give me such an impactful, dynamic video. What makes me even more joyful is seeing that many people continue to appreciate this song because of it.

In honor of its 20-year milestone, Mariah Carey is releasing a deluxe edition of The Emancipation of Mimi. This reissue boasts remixed songs, unheard tracks, acapella versions, instrumental tracks, and live performances, all bundled together in a collector’s vinyl set with two LPs.

The Emancipation of Mimi (20th Anniversary Edition) arrives on May 30, 2025.
