In a recent interview, Margaret Qualley discussed the challenging filming of an intense scene in her upcoming body horror movie titled The Substance. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Margaret Qualley shared insights into her preparation for the role of Sue in her newest movie, The Substance. Qualley explained that before filming the dance sequences in the fitness video, she began practicing and was tutored by a choreographer. Admittedly, she initially felt anxious about mastering those scenes flawlessly.
In the movie, Demi Moore plays Elisabeth Sparkle, a once-popular Hollywood actress turned 1980s-style fitness video host. As producers push for a younger face, Elisabeth eavesdrops on a discussion about a drug that could enhance her. Impulsively deciding to use the substance, she gives birth inexplicably to Sue, portrayed by Qualley, a youthful and attractive duplicate of herself. Sue swiftly takes over the fitness gig, becoming the talk of the town and stirring an intense fascination among its residents.
The actress also shared that prior to shooting, she had numerous “weekend practice sessions” with the dancing troupe. She vividly remembered her feelings during a dance class where she was surrounded by experienced dancers who were all familiar with the routine, whereas she was still grappling to grasp it.
Qualley mentioned that director Coralie Fargeat kept an eye on her during those early days, as it was one of her initial times there. She explained, “I thought to myself, ‘I’ll be back in a minute, I’ve got this!’ I ran off to the restroom and started crying, then asked, ‘Could we work one-on-one for a while?’ It was well beyond my comfort zone. I’m not naturally comfortable with this.
Qualley admitted that feigning confidence when you don’t truly feel it, or attempting to portray warmth when you’re cold, is significantly more challenging. The actress confided that the movie challenged her both physically and emotionally, revealing that she constantly felt that pressure each day. She further remarked that recalling the dancing was a grueling experience.
Meanwhile, The Substance is now in theaters.
