As a fervent admirer of Maren Morris, I have to say that her courage and unwavering stance against racism and bigotry is nothing short of inspiring. The fact that she, a mother, had to face death threats not just towards herself but also towards her young son, Hayes, due to her public shaming of Morgan Wallen for his inappropriate use of a racial slur, speaks volumes about the state of our society.
More recently, Maren Morris disclosed that both she and her family, including her little boy, have faced unexpected death threats. This came after she criticized Morgan Wallen for using a racially offensive term in 2021, a move that led to severe criticism towards her. The period following this incident was particularly frightening for Morris as she endured harsh backlash.
On the Work in Progress podcast recorded on August 29, while conversing with Sophia Bush, Morris discussed the repercussions of facing backlash, emphasizing its profound effect on her as a parent. She further elaborated that not only was she targeted but also her son, which she found deeply disturbing.
During the occurrence in question, Hayes – Morris’ son with her former husband, songwriter Ryan Hurd – had not yet turned one year old. In a conversation with Bush, Morris explained, “The threats weren’t solely directed at me. They targeted Hayes as well. So it felt like, ‘Wow, now even the children, those you claimed to care so deeply for, are being dragged into this.’ “
Following a video clip of Wallen using a racial slur becoming widely shared, the artist Morris teamed up with others such as Kelsea Ballerini and Mickey Guyton in condemning the Lies Lies Lives singer. Morris expressed dismay at what seemed to be repeated behavior and anger over the lack of accountability regarding these actions.
Morris considered the feedback directed at her criticism and found it odd that people were quite protective when it came to criticism leveled against Wallen’s use of racial slurs. In her opinion, this response shed light on their feelings about such criticisms rather than her stance against racism or transphobia.
A week following the viral video incident, Wallen expressed remorse and attempted to clarify his actions through apology videos. Contrarily, Morris remained resolute in her views, stating, “I have no regrets, no apologies. I still feel exactly as I did that day.”
Regardless of the strong criticism that Morris had to deal with, she stands by what she said the first time. Maren Morris said she regrets nothing and will continue fighting racism, transphobia and homophobia.
