Marathon is coming to PC, PS5, and Xbox in September 2025

Excitingly, I can’t wait for the day, September 23, 2025, when Sony and Bungie will unleash Marathon on my gaming devices! From the comfort of my PC, or immersed in the latest technology with PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, this classic game will be mine to explore once more.

In this new installment, decades after the initial games, the multiplayer extraction shooter brings players back to Tau Ceti IV, where they’ll engage in a fierce competition against one another. Each team is made up of three players who will scour the wreckage of the colony for valuable items like weapons and equipment. However, the ruins aren’t entirely safe; besides rival teams, AI forces are hidden among the debris.

In Marathon, players get to retain all the valuable items found during their adventure if they successfully complete it; however, failure results in losing everything amassed. The game also carries elements of a hero shooter, as each character, known as a Runner, has unique abilities, stats, and playstyles that can be enhanced with loot discovered throughout the game.

Bungie announced that certain players were granted early access to the game development process, a first for the company as they’ve never before allowed outsiders this level of influence on shaping the game’s direction so early in its development.

In an entry on the PlayStation Blog, game director Joe Ziegler stated that initially, during playtesting, maps functioned more like a continuous environment. This allowed players to rejoin the same map server instance numerous times. However, feedback indicated this setup led to uneven matches and unpredictability, as someone might camp at spawn points indefinitely or the desired loot could have already been claimed by another player.

Consequently, the game structure has been altered so that every contest begins anew for all participants. Now that Marathon has been unveiled, there will be increased testing sessions with broader involvement, starting with a closed alpha test scheduled for late April.
