Manor Lords’ AI-controlled towns are starting to take shape

In the popular medieval city-building game ‘Manor Lords’, a much-desired feature is the addition of AI-managed towns on the map. Currently, players construct their settlements alone, with only bandit camps being the AI-controlled entities appearing in the environment. However, this is about to change. The developers at Slavic Magic have rolled out an extensive update to celebrate the game’s first year in Early Access, and the introduction of AI-managed towns is a significant focus.

The developer announced that the AI now has the ability to establish and manage a small village. Extensive efforts were made to ensure the AI can utilize the plot tool effectively. Our team is currently focusing on enhancing its urban planning skills, and soon we’ll move onto developing its trading abilities and farming capabilities as well. This significant advancement brings us one step closer to fully implementing this feature.

Initially, Manor Lords was conceived as a one-person project by Slavic Magic. However, the positive reception and subsequent demand following its Early Access launch compelled a larger team to come together around the game. Currently, the team includes eight additional developers to manage the workload, along with some external assistance.

As an enthusiast, I’m excited to share that AI-managed settlements aren’t the only innovation in the works. Slavic Magic is stirring up a new interface for resource tracking, where every region’s production and consumption will be meticulously displayed. We’re also tweaking the approval system slightly, so recent events won’t carry as much weight on the population’s current sentiments.

A significant new feature coming to the game is the maintenance system, which means certain structures will demand resources for upkeep in the future. This implies that you’ll need a consistent supply of tools and materials to keep them functioning smoothly. The developer hinted at an upcoming system that could enhance both maintenance and overall productivity.

Moreover, new structures are also under consideration: The Quarry will offer an endless supply of stone from abundant reserves, and the Lime Kiln will provide you with lime, essential for constructing complex stone structures such as castles within the game.

Incidentally, it seems that castles present a formidable task for the navigation system within the game.

In a somewhat unconventional approach, Slavic Magic pondered that unlike many games, we strive not to exaggerate the size of walls and expand passages to aid units in navigation. Instead, we aim for realism by maintaining narrow corridors and small entrances, as if the medieval architects intentionally made it challenging for large military groups to move about the castle.

Here are some anticipated improvements: Enhancements for better camera performance, changes in character advancement, polishing of user interface, introduction of river fishing, modifications to certain castle items, and more appealing resource spots on the map.

This has been quite an unpredictable year, but I’m excited to reveal even more as preparations come together,” the developer summed up.
