Actor Tom Noonan, known for his memorable performances in science fiction and horror films, has died at age 74, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He was particularly famous for playing the serial killer Francis Dollarhyde in Michael Mann’s Manhunter, which introduced the character of Hannibal Lecter before The Silence of the Lambs. Many also remember him as Frankenstein’s Monster in the 1987 cult classic The Monster Squad. Throughout his career, Noonan appeared in films like Heat, Robocop 2, Last Action Hero, and House of the Devil, as well as television shows including The X-Files, 12 Monkeys, and The Leftovers.
Fred Dekker, the director of The Monster Squad, announced the passing of actor Noonan on Facebook, sharing fond recollections of their time working together. Here’s what Dekker wrote:
Tom’s portrayal of Frankenstein in The Monster Squad remains a standout role in my film work, and it was greatly enhanced by the incredible makeup created by Stan Winston, sculpted by Tom Woodruff Jr., and applied by Zoltan Elek. I was a huge fan of his performance as Francis Dollarhyde in Michael Mann’s Manhunter, so I really hoped he’d consider the part, though I knew it would be difficult to get him on board. Thankfully, he agreed to meet and discuss the role at his home. He found the makeup process tiring and irritating – he often ripped it off after filming, and one night even drove home with it still on! – but he was always a true professional and a pleasure to work with. The world has lost a truly gifted actor. Rest in peace, Tom, and thank you for everything.
I always thought Tom Noonan was a fascinating actor. He wasn’t your typical leading man – at 6’5″, he often played really unique, memorable characters. He wasn’t going to be the next Kevin Costner, and that’s what I loved about him! But he wasn’t limited by typecasting either. He was a creative force – in the ’90s, he started writing plays, and actually directed two of them – The Wife and What Happened Was – as films! His final role was in Wonderstruck back in 2017. With over forty films under his belt, I really think everyone should check out his work. He was often overlooked, but truly a fantastic actor. He’s survived by his daughter, Wanda, and his son.
